Gusto is hiring two Staff Engineers for its Product & AI Security Engineering team to own and evolve security foundations across Gusto's products and AI/LLM experiences, including authentication, authorization, and data protection at scale. You'll design and operate high-availability security systems, build platforms and tooling for product teams, tackle AI/LLM security challenges, and provide technical leadership on security best practices. The role requires 10+ years of backend engineering experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems, proven expertise with modern security tooling (SAST, DAST, SIEM, SCA), and proficiency in languages like Ruby, Python, Kotlin, or TypeScript; you should be comfortable breaking down complex cross-functional problems but don't need prior security domain experience if genuinely interested in growing into it. Gusto offers competitive base pay ($218,940–$260,000 in San Francisco), equity (RSUs), and benefits, with hybrid work expectations (2–3 days/week in Denver, SF Bay Area, NYC, or Scottsdale offices).
