Job overview and responsibilities

The Manager of ATS Data serves as the technical lead for United's FAA System Wide Information Management (SWIM) data portfolio, responsible for designing and implementing real-time air traffic data solutions that support operational decision-making and enterprise applications.

This role leads the architecture of SWIM data ingestion, streaming interfaces, and data processing pipelines while establishing data standards, governance practices, and ensuring high-quality, scalable data products across the enterprise.  The position is responsible for monitoring data health and integrity across the SWIM ecosystem, proactively identifying discrepancies and partnering across business units to resolve data quality, availability, and performance issues.  Proficiency in programming languages (Java, Scala, Python, SQL) and cloud-based data warehousing services, to work closely with Digital Technology, Data Engineering, and Air Traffic Strategy teams to design cloud-based solutions and APIs while developing real-time dashboards in PowerBI.

As United's technical liaison with the FAA, this role collaborates on SWIM services, system enhancements, and emerging modernization initiatives while representing United's operational needs in the evolution of the National Airspace System.  The Manager of ATS Data is an exceptional communicator with strong analytical skills who can translate complex technical concepts into business solutions, build cross-organizational relationships, and drive innovation in air traffic data architecture and data analytics.

  • Collaborate with and across teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions in full-stack development tools and technologies
  • Utilize programming/scripting languages like Java, Scala, Python and SQL and NoSQL databases and Cloud based data warehousing services such as Redshift
  • Coordinate business requirements definitions and interface, communications, leadership presentations, clarifying strategy and priorities.
  • Portfolio management, coordinating with Data Engineering, Data Science, and other Digital Technologies teams to align on priorities, and tracking progress against goals.
  • Act as a data subject matter expert to guide and support various enterprise teams on data centric solutions including but not limited to security, performance, reliability, maintainability and well-formed architecture.

Qualifications

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related discipline or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of experience with large cloud environments, Big Data technologies
  • Experience working on large-scale/high visibility projects
  • Subject matter expert in Big Data, AWS technology
  • Understanding of all aspects of data architectures, data dictionaries, and data lineages in a large-scale enterprise environment
  • Demonstrable experience with distributed data warehousing and data processing systems such as Redshift
  • Proficient with programming / scripting languages like Java, Scala, Python and SQL and NoSQL databases and Cloud based data warehousing services such as Redshift
  • Deep knowledge of traditional data warehousing (models, practices, and processes), cloud-based data warehouses, data lakes, and data streaming
  • Exceptional system design abilities, including high-scale ETL/ELT pipelines including leveraging python
  • Experience with or solid understanding of data pipelines and event-driven architectures (Kinesis, Kafka)
  • Proficient with AWS Cloud technologies (i.e. S3, Lambda, Dynamo, EC2), Python, Spark, and Hadoop
  • Experience in Machine learning and/or predictive analytics
  • Advanced knowledge of software lifecycles and testing automation
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and provide strategic insight and analysis to solve problems and make improvements
  • Ability to make PowerBI dashboards
  • Lead data integration and curation, including requirements definition and testing
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex issues to leadership and customers
  • Up to 10% travel
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

  • Master's degree
  • 2+ years of experience in the aviation industry
  • Cloudera/Hadoop Certification or AWS Developer/Big Data Analytics certification a plus
  • Knowledge of FAA SWIM

The base pay range for this role is $102,220.00 to $133,194.00.
The base salary range/hourly rate listed is dependent on job-related, factors such as experience, education, and skills. This position is also eligible for bonus and/or long-term incentive compensation awards.
