Job Description:

To provide leadership for the training associated with the Family Medicine Residency Program to ensure its effectiveness and success.

Scope

The Family Medicine Residency Program Director plans, organizes, implements, directs, and coordinates all activities of the program and performs related physician duties as required. This role functions as the chief administrative and professional medical executive for the Program.

Job Essentials

Direct the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all medical and administrative activities of the Program; integrating the work of the Program with the other divisions of the Hospital to assure fulfillment of all Program accreditation requirements promulgated by the ACGME, the Residency Review Committee for Family Practice, and the ABFP.

In cooperation with the sponsoring institution, establish the Program mission, objectives, and measures of effectiveness; guides strategic planning for the ongoing growth and development of the Program.

Formulate policies and procedures for the effective implementation of the Program mission and ensure the enforcement of all laws and regulation pertaining to its operation.

Maintain liaison with the University of Utah, School of Medicine, Department of Family and Preventative Medicine for the purpose of coordinating and improving the quality and content of the Program.

Represent the Program at the Intermountain Health Corporate GME Committee meetings.

Make community and public presentations to various boards, medical staffs, councils, civic and community groups, or other legal bodies to augment support for the Program by explaining the Program’s mission, accomplishments, rules, and regulations.

When appropriate, aggressively pursue, prepare, and administer federal, state, and special agency grants-in-aid programs related to the Program.

Supervise a professional office staff responsible for the Program objectives to include proper delegation of duties, selecting and evaluating staff, and advising on difficult assignments. 

Be responsible for an effective curriculum and evaluation process to ensure that trainees receive appropriate teaching, clinic, and rotation experiences, and evaluation.

Be responsible for faculty recruitment, retention, and development.

Assist in the development and execution of quality management programs, review clinical records and determine if appropriate treatment is being given.

Select, train, and evaluate the performance of resident and faculty physicians either through direct oversight or effective delegation of such duties; take or recommend appropriate action.

Prepare and maintain appropriate records and reports related to the Program, and the records and reports of those patients under the care of resident and faculty physicians.

Be responsible for ensuring that resident physicians obtain and record medical histories, perform physical examinations and place progress notes in the records of all patients in the care of the resident physicians.

Serve as a role model for family-oriented, continuous and comprehensive care in the office, hospital and other community settings. This includes the performance of skillful history and physical examinations, effective diagnosis of diseases, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, and prescription and administrative of effective treatments. 

Designate and supervise a Family Practice Clinic Coordinator.

Recommend new facilities and medical services, new methods of treatment, and maintain a family-oriented care and prevention practice. 18. Coordinate acquisition of resources needed for new equipment and new or revised medical facilities with the Clinic Director and Hospital Administrator.

Represent the Program locally, i.e., liaison with other departments, outside organizations, and other residency programs.

Represent the Program regionally and nationally, i.e., liaison with other state and national family practice residency programs, membership in key organizations, e.g., American Academy of Family Practice, Association of Family Practice Residency Directors, and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Provide patient care at Program Clinics:

Perform clinical services including diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of conditions requiring medical Care.

Consult with other physicians as requested and provide referring physicians and/or Hospital with written reports on results of examinations within a reasonable time following such requests.

Schedule his/her work hours so that availability meets the needs of the Program and other members of the Program staff during facility hours as established by the Hospital.

Provide emergency/on call coverage for the Program as mutually agreed to by the Physician and other Program physicians.

Provide appropriate coverage of his/her patients admitted to the Hospital. 

Consider patient preference, payor restrictions, and self-insurance restrictions in making patient admissions to hospital facilities to the extent that such considerations are consistent with both federal and state guidelines. 

Seek, obtain, and maintain the right to participate in health plans or third-party arrangements as required by the Hospital. 

Provide necessary information and complete appropriate provider applications in a timely fashion as requested by the Hospital. 

Accept patients for care and provide services regardless of ability to pay consistent with the mission and policy of the Hospital.

Participate in utilization management processes and committees as defined by the Hospital.  

Use the Hospital information systems and programs as such systems are developed.  

Assure that utilization and quality of care studies are regularly performed in accordance with Hospital policy and accreditation standards and that individual performance is at a high level consistent with Quality and Utilization Management criteria adopted by the Hospital.

Participate in review of medical charts as required by accreditation standards and policies and procedures and will be responsible for timely submission of properly completed reports to the Hospital.

Assist the Hospital in developing a pricing structure for all physician services consistent with usual and customary fees in the area.

Ensure that all billable services are identified and billings for all services are initiated, including billings for services performed while on call.

Keep or cause to be kept in the Program accurate and complete medical records in an adequate filing system to be furnished by Hospital. His/her medical services comply with all applicable Hospital, governmental, medical and other record keeping and recording requirements.  

Assist the Hospital in marketing efforts to increase appropriate patient volume in the Program and promotion with community agencies and other organizations.

Minimum Qualifications  

M.D or D.O. with board certification in specialty. Degree must be obtained through an accredited institution. Education is verified.

Licensed to practice Medicine.

Maintain Board Certification from the American Board of Family Practice

Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.

Possess skill in financial aspects of residency Education and practice management - 

Holds active privileges at an Intermountain Hospital and is credentialed by SelectHealth.

Demonstrate administrative skills and ability to work with Hospital administration

Possess clinical skills in all aspects of Family Medicine, including Obstetrics

Have interest in and ability to work with a diverse number of constituents, physician faculty and residents

Have the ability to serve as an exemplary role model as a practitioner who is well respected by professional colleagues

Preferred Qualifications  

Prior residency Education experience

Residency training in Family practice Medicine

Prior experience in medical management

Physical Requirements

Interact with others requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.

Operate computers, telephones, office equipment, and manipulate paper requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience. 

$7.25 - $999.99
