About the Role:

Red Hat's DNS and Operating Systems (D/OS) team owns the foundational infrastructure layer the entire company runs on: DNS, Linux and Windows OS platforms, full-disk encryption, and access and bastion services. We serve everyone from engineering labs to global business operations, and we care about operational excellence, clean automation, and systems that work without heroics. Red Hat is an open source company, and that shapes how we operate - decisions happen in the open, knowledge is shared, and the strongest technical argument wins regardless of title.

We are looking for a Principal Information Systems Engineer who has gone deep in infrastructure and is now as comfortable setting direction as executing it. You will drive how our services evolve, work with team leadership to establish the technical standards the team works to, and serve as a credible technical voice with adjacent teams. The team will bring you up to speed on D/OS-specific tooling and institutional knowledge. What we need from you is the experience and ownership mindset to take real technical authority, ramp quickly, and help us improve our portfolio of offerings.

What You Will Do?

  • Partner with IT leadership and adjacent IT teams as the D/OS technical authority on shared infrastructure concerns.

  • Own major services across the portfolio (DNS, Linux platform, automation, access services) and drive architectural decisions with documented trade-offs.

  • Lead infrastructure changes from scoping through delivery, whether upgrades, migrations, or re-architecture.

  • Define SLOs, close systemic reliability gaps, and lead post-mortems that produce durable fixes.

  • Join the team's global on-call rotation as you ramp in; be a stabilizing presence during incidents.

  • Grow senior engineers through design review, mentorship, and hands-on guidance; document decisions and operational knowledge to outlast any individual.

What You Will Bring?

  • Leadership & Mentorship: Demonstrated success growing senior engineers through code reviews, architecture discussions, and active mentorship.

  • Operational & Architectural Strategy: Strong focus on designing, evolving, and sunsetting services rather than simple maintenance. Proven ability to define SLOs, eliminate toil, and articulate complex architectural trade-offs to stakeholders ranging from peers to leadership.

  • Communication & Transparency: Commitment to transparent decision-making, thorough documentation, and precise asynchronous communication across global time zones.

  • Technical Expertise: Deep experience operating RHEL at enterprise scale and building sophisticated automation with Ansible (playbooks, roles, AAP workflows, and execution environments).

  • Infrastructure Proficiency: Extensive background managing core enterprise services such as DNS, DHCP/IPAM, and proxy/egress control (e.g., Infoblox, NS1, Satellite).

  • Delivery & Pipelines: Experience managing CI/CD pipelines and GitOps as first-class infrastructure, prioritizing versioning, testing, and service promotion.

  • Ownership & Initiative: Highly self-directed with a record of identifying high-leverage opportunities, investigating system history prior to implementation, and ensuring all projects are production-ready, documented, and cleanly transitioned.
