Accountabilities:
- Design, train, and optimize large-scale transformer and hybrid foundation models.
- Develop and improve transformer architectures, including attention mechanisms, RoPE, ALiBi, Grouped Query Attention (GQA), and Mixture-of-Experts (MoE).
- Build models from first principles while driving architectural innovation beyond existing frameworks.
- Diagnose and resolve training instabilities and optimization challenges at scale.
- Make strategic decisions around data, compute resources, and model architecture tradeoffs.
- Apply and validate scaling laws, including compute-versus-data optimization approaches.
- Design and experiment with advanced objectives and alignment techniques such as next-token prediction, contrastive learning, RLHF, DPO, and GRPO.
- Lead large-scale distributed model training using technologies such as FSDP, ZeRO-3, tensor parallelism, and pipeline parallelism.
- Apply advanced training techniques including mixed precision (bf16, fp8) and gradient checkpointing.
- Collaborate closely with ML systems teams while maintaining ownership of model architecture and research direction.
- Advanced experience in deep learning, representation learning, and modern AI architectures.
- Strong understanding of transformer-based models and large language model training methodologies.
- Proven experience designing, training, or improving large-scale neural networks.
- Hands-on expertise with optimization techniques, including optimizers such as AdamW, Lion, and Adafactor, as well as learning-rate and warmup scheduling strategies.
- Deep knowledge of training dynamics, optimizer instability, gradient behavior, and scaling challenges.
- Experience with distributed training frameworks and techniques for large AI models.
- Strong programming skills, particularly in machine learning frameworks and research environments.
- Ability to independently drive research initiatives and translate theoretical concepts into practical solutions.
