A Day in the Life

The Business Product Owner is accountable for maximizing the business value delivered by a dedicated, fixed capacity, cross functional team (Pod). Operating within Medtronic’s Agile, product aligned operating model, the Business Product Owner represents business and customer needs, translates strategic priorities into a clearly ordered backlog, and partners closely with the Pod to deliver incremental, measurable outcomes through continuous delivery and feedback loops.

The Senior Business Product Owner balances near term operational and customer outcomes with longer term product direction. They continuously adjust priorities based on value, learning, and performance data— shifting scope rather than timelines or team capacity— to ensure delivery remains focused on the highest impact business outcomes.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

Business Value & Backlog Ownership

  • Own and maintain a single, prioritized Product Backlog aligned to business objectives, customer needs, and value drivers
  • Translate business problems, opportunities, and desired outcomes into clearly defined features and user stories with acceptance criteria
  • Continuously refine and reprioritize backlog items based on value, risk, dependencies, and fixed Pod capacity
  • Make timely, transparent trade‑off decisions to maximize business value delivery within the team’s capacity

Value‑Driven Delivery & Outcomes

  • Define and communicate clear business outcomes and success measures for backlog items and releases
  • Partner with the Pod to deliver work incrementally, enabling early validation of value and fast feedback
  • Validate delivered outcomes against expected benefits, operational improvements, or customer impact
  • Use insights from delivery metrics and stakeholder feedback to guide future prioritization and product direction

Stakeholder Partnership & Feedback Loops

  • Serve as the primary business point of contact for product priorities, scope, and value decisions
  • Engage stakeholders through regular reviews, demonstrations, and feedback sessions
  • Balance competing stakeholder needs using value‑based prioritization rather than scope commitments
  • Ensure expectations are aligned with Pod capacity and delivery realities

Pod Collaboration & Enablement

  • Work day‑to‑day with the Pod to clarify intent, priorities, and acceptance criteria
  • Participate actively in Agile ceremonies and planning events to support shared understanding
  • Enable the Pod to focus on delivery by providing clear priorities and fast decision‑making
  • Foster a collaborative, outcome‑focused working relationship built on trust and accountability

Alignment & Dependency Management

  • Ensure backlog priorities remain aligned with broader product, portfolio, or value‑stream direction
  • Identify and actively manage dependencies with other Pods, teams, or initiatives
  • Proactively surface risks, constraints, and trade‑offs to support informed decision‑making
  • Adjust priorities as conditions change while maintaining delivery stability
