Senior DevOps Engineer
At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.
The Position
The Opportunity
Roche Diagnostics has created a new Platform area that will change the way software is developed at Roche. Our challenge is to bring together complex diagnostic and treatment data from medical devices and IT systems within a hospital and intelligently process and present this data to doctors and care-givers to improve patient care. You will build a SaaS business from the ground up with the ability to influence the product and architecture, working side-by-side with world-class professionals who want to impact global healthcare delivery.
As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will be the technical authority responsible for the design, deployment, and security of our global cloud and edge infrastructure. You won't work in an infrastructure silo. Instead, you will act as a strategic advisor and bridge, working in close synchronization with Platform Architects. Your deep software and infrastructure background will allow you to guide architectural decisions, ensuring that application designs translate into highly scalable, secure, and deployable infrastructure blueprints—whether running on massive public cloud environments or highly restricted, air-gapped hospital networks.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Strategy
- Vision & Roadmap: Define the technical vision and roadmap for build, release, and deployment pipelines across multiple products and teams.
- Infrastructure-Software Alignment: Partner closely with Platform Architects to evaluate software design concepts. Guide them on how their architectural decisions impact infrastructure scalability, networking, cost, and security at enterprise scale.
- Technical Governance: Lead infrastructure architecture reviews, author RFCs, and define organization-wide deployment and governance standards for cloud and edge environments.
- Hands-on Engineering: Tackle the most complex, high-impact, and ambiguous technical problems directly.
Organizational Alignment & Influence
- Platform Chapter Alignment: Lead alignment and represent the team within the Platform Chapter, actively influencing DevOps and Cloud practices at the chapter and broader Roche level.
- Strategic Partnerships: Partner with Engineering Managers, Product, and Security to align technical strategy with business goals, contributing to technical strategies that extend far beyond your immediate team to shape department- or company-level initiatives.
Infrastructure & Operations
- Everything-as-Code: Lead the design and implementation of infrastructure as code (IaC) standards and reusable modules, utilizing tools like Terraform, Terragrunt, or Crossplane.
- CI/CD Integration: Facilitate and optimize release strategies, cadence, and software stack integration with our existing CI/CD pipelines to ensure continuous improvement.
- Observability Strategy: Design robust, large-scale logging, monitoring, and alerting systems (metrics, logs, traces, SLOs/SLIs) to support operations teams and ensure absolute system reliability.
- Process Alignment: Ensure all continuous delivery processes are aligned with operations, working proactively to establish a continuous improvement mindset.
Team Uplift & Culture
- Mentorship: Mentor and coach DevOps and software engineers, raising the technical bar and growing capabilities across the organization.
- Culture & Evangelism: Foster a team culture that values technical excellence together with support and compassion for individuals. Act as a champion for a genuine DevOps mindset across the broader Roche Engineering Community.
Who you are
Required Experience and Expertise
- Experience: 10+ years of hands-on experience in Systems, Infrastructure, SRE, or Platform Engineering, operating at a Staff/Principal level with a proven track record of scaling infrastructure.
- Architectural Sync Capabilities: Proven experience working side-by-side with Software/Platform Architects, demonstrating the ability to influence software design from an infrastructure, networking, and scalability perspective.
- Strong Programming Foundation: Proficient in at least one major language—preferably Go, Python or Java—enabling you to understand complex application architectures, read developer code, and build custom automation/Kubernetes controllers if required.
- Advanced AWS & Security Expertise: Deep architectural knowledge of AWS cloud-native services, multi-account strategies (Control Tower/Organizations), and absolute mastery of AWS IAM and cloud security boundaries.
- Kubernetes Mastery: Recognized expert in Kubernetes infrastructure, networking abstractions, Helm charts, and GitOps workflows (FluxCD).
- Infrastructure-as-Code: Expert-level proficiency with Terraform and Terragrunt, treating infrastructure strictly through the lens of modern software engineering.
Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)
- The Edge & Air-Gap Challenge: Real-world experience deploying, upgrading, and maintaining highly resilient distributed infrastructure in on-premise or air-gapped environments with strict networking constraints.
- Regulated Industries: Experience working in regulated environments (GxP, ISO 13485, HIPAA, GDPR) with an understanding of implementing security-by-design.
- Observability Architecture: Experience designing large-scale infrastructure monitoring, logging, and alerting systems (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry) to support 24/7 reliability.
- Certifications: Advanced Kubernetes (CKA, CKS) or Advanced AWS (Solutions Architect/DevOps Professional) certifications.
