Collins Aerospace, an RTX business, is looking to hire a Principal Software Engineer to join our Avionics Connected Aviation Solutions team. We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Software Engineer to join our team developing and supporting our Air Traffic Control Systems worldwide.

We develop safety-of-life air traffic management systems for multi-national customers used for controlling and monitoring civil and military aviation traffic. You will play a key role in developing and sustaining cutting-edge avionics systems that are at the forefront of aerospace technology.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on a large-scale, legacy code base while advancing your skills in modern software development methodologies and tools. You will collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams in a dynamic and innovative environment to help design, develop, integrate, and test operational software components throughout the development lifecycle.

This position will sit at our Aguadilla, PR location. You must be residing in Puerto Rico at the time of starting employment. Relocation is not offered.

This role is categorized as hybrid, with 3 days onsite and 2 days remote following the schedule assigned by the Manager.

What YOU will do:

  • Develop and maintain software for avionics systems, focusing on high-quality, safety-critical solutions.
  • Investigate, analyze, and resolve complex technical issues within a large, legacy code base, demonstrating a “digger” working style.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design and implement software solutions that meet program requirements and customer expectations.
  • Participate in all stages of the software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, integration, testing, and maintenance.
  • Contribute to DevSecOps initiatives, including the creation and management of pipelines, automation, and orchestration tooling.
  • Work with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and manage deployment using tools like Helm charts.
  • Utilize messaging frameworks such as ZeroMQ or RabbitMQ to support system communication requirements.
  • Actively participate in Agile development processes, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, retrospectives, backlog grooming, and story pointing.
  • Maintain high-quality documentation and adhere to team processes and standards to ensure software maturity and compliance.
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers, providing guidance, technical expertise, and support to foster their professional growth and ensure successful project outcomes.

Qualifications you must have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated professional experience communicating in English across all levels of an organization (verbal and written).
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering.
  • Strong experience with object-oriented programming (OOP) and compiled languages such as C, C++, or Java.
  • Experience working with build systems such as Make, CMake, or Maven.
  • Proficiency in Unix/Linux environments and scripting languages such as Bash or Python.
  • Experience with DevSecOps methodologies and tools for automation, orchestration, and pipelines.
  • Proficiency with containerization and orchestration technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm charts.
  • Experience with asynchronous messaging frameworks (e.g., ZeroMQ or RabbitMQ).
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and tools such as Jira, Confluence, Bamboo, and Bitbucket.
  • Exposure to or willingness to learn Ada programming language.
  • Experience with air traffic management systems or avionics, particularly in safety-critical environments.
  • Strong debugging and software testing skills.
  • Experience working on large, legacy code bases and the ability to independently deep-dive into complex tasks.
