Job Description:
The IHOPP Surgical Technician IV performs highly specialized surgical and technical functions as a service line specialist within Intermountain Health Transplant Services. This role supports deceased donor organ procurement, surgical recovery, transport logistics, and advanced organ preservation and perfusion activities for organs intended for transplant.Working under the supervision of the recovering transplant surgeon and nursing leadership, the Surgical Technician IV functions in an expanded scope role that includes first-assist responsibilities (as permitted) on deceased donor patients, organ labeling and packaging in compliance with OPTN policy, and participation in cannulation of organs for hypothermic and normothermic machine perfusion.
This position requires advanced surgical expertise, extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to support complex, time-sensitive transplant operations while ensuring regulatory compliance and optimal transplant outcomes.
What to Expect in This Role
Frequent out-of-state travel, often via small aircraft with Intermountain Flight and Ambulance Services
Heavy call requirements, including nights, weekends and holidays
36-40 scheduled hours per week, with a mix of days, nights, weekends, and holidays (specific scheduling details will be discussed during the interview).
High flexibility and availability are essential due to the unpredictable nature of organ recovery and transplant operations
What We're Looking For
In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications listed below, the ideal candidate holds a CCTC, CPTC, or CTP certification and brings specialized experience in transplant surgery, cardiac, vascular, trauma, and organ procurement organization (OPO) environments.
We are prioritizing applicants with 2+ years of surgical technologist experience in a Level I or Level II trauma hospital, along with demonstrated expertise supporting complex surgical and transplant workflows.

Essential Functions
Practices all surgical technology duties safely and according to policy.
Responsible for fire, sharps and specimen safety, accepts and dispenses medication under the direction of the OR RN and per policy, participates in time out and all safety protocol. Speaks up for safety.
Mobilizes IHOPP personnel, equipment, and supplies upon case notification, coordinating logistics and transportation for organ recovery and preservation cases.
Communicates with transplant surgeons, donor recovery centers, implanting centers, aviation partners, and coordinators to ensure timely and safe case execution.
Prepares donor operating rooms and maintains aseptic technique, including sterile field setup, instrument preparation, patient prep/draping, and participation in surgical time-outs.
Assists recovering surgeons during organ recovery procedures within approved Surgical Technician IV first-assist scope of practice.
Performs organ labeling, identification, packaging, and transport in compliance with OPTN/UNOS policies and Intermountain Health procedures.
Sets up, operates, monitors, and troubleshoots hypothermic and normothermic machine perfusion devices as applicable.
Responsible for assessing organ viability on machine preservation devices and communicate findings and recommendations to transplant surgeons.
Ensures accurate and timely documentation in UNet, DonorNet, iTransplant, Epic, and other required systems.
Coordinates transport of specimens and supplies, restocks equipment, and ensures readiness for subsequent cases.
Supports quality improvement initiatives, data tracking, research activities, and adherence to all regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technician (ORT) program, OR:
Graduated from a non-accredited surgical tech program within the past six months (not eligible for Tech in Surgery exam), OR
Two years of scrub tech experience in hospital/military surgical services within the last three years, OR
International equivalent training with legal authorization to work in the U.S.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Demonstrated competency in general (open abdominal), cardiovascular, peripheral vascular, and transplant surgical procedures.
Ability to take assigned call, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to travel by air and ground as required for organ recovery and transport activities.
Preferred Qualifications
Active national certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or equivalent (NBSTSA or NCCST), obtained or verified within one year of hire.
Transplant-related certification (CCTC, CPTC, or CTP), obtained within one year of hire and maintained.
Experience with organ recovery, preservation, and machine perfusion technologies.
2 years OR Surgical Technologist Experience
2 years OPO Surgical Recovery Experience
Physical Requirements
Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles
