Overview
The RN Clinical Specialist will be responsible for serving as a role model of excellence in nursing knowledge and clinical practice for the critical care environment. Major roles of the RN Clinical Specialist include those of educator, consultant, researcher, change agent, and clinical guideline expert. Collaborates with other clinical educators to conduct educational needs assessments for the different department patient populations they oversee. Utilizes principles of leadership, change theory and adult education to improve nursing practice and promote quality care. Supports System and Nursing Strategic Plans, Relationship-Based Care, and Shared Leadership.

- Offers consistent and visible support to team members. Supports Shared Leadership and encourages staff participation on unit-based teams. Offers support and feedback to peers and staff. Applies principles of caring and healing in interactions with patients and families and with colleagues. - Provides direct and/or indirect care based on identified patient needs. Plans for the education of patients and families as identified through needs assessment. Develops educational and professional practice goals and objectives annually and reports on progress. Assists in development of standards, policies, and procedures. Participates in clinical preceptorship and implements changes as needed to reflect best practice standards. Participates on system-wide committees. Makes rounds on unit(s) to evaluate and monitor care. Communicates planned changes with staff prior to implementation to facilitate the adjustment phase. Practices in accordance with professional association standards and legal requirements. Role models the nursing process from admission through discharge planning. Develops new forms and/or suggests revisions of forms to improve quality of care. Assists in the selection of appropriate products and equipment. Evaluates staff performance during clinical emergencies and offers guidance and assistance as appropriate. Serves as coach and mentor for less experienced colleagues.
- Collaborates with Managers and Directors to plan/implement and evaluate educational activities. Assesses and recommends the need to implement changes required to deliver quality patient care. Assists nursing staff with decision making in clinical situations. Collaborates with other health care professionals and nursing in the establishment of goals and implementation of the plan of care. Serves as a consultant/resource person as requested. Professional standards and current research/evidence-based practice drive decision-making.
- Assists staff in identifying educational needs of patients and/or families concerning alterations in health, the disease process, and the plan of care during hospitalization or post hospitalization. Plans for the education of patients and families as identified through needs assessment. Encourages personnel to attain highest level of professional growth. Participates in development of patient educational materials. Collaborates with Nursing leadership team to identify cross unit learning needs. Identifies educational needs of staff on unit level. Facilitates the application of appropriate theories of nursing and other sciences. Provides for dissemination of current information and theories necessary to improve quality of patient care. Assists in the development of a plan to precept selected students. Coordinates and/or participates in community educational programs. Seeks and supports opportunities for professional growth and development. Advances professional nursing through organizations, publications, and other activities.
- Develops methods for evaluating clinical nursing problems in conjunction with Manager(s). Provides for dissemination of patient research developments in the field of specialization. Participates in research at the micro-level. Monitors safety practices and recognizes trends in conjunction with Manager(s). Monitors unit(s) compliance with regulatory standards in conjunction with Manager(s). Provides Manager with input into performance appraisal process. Monitors documentation to meet regulatory institutional, and legal, standards. Uses current evidence in the literature to drive practice and better outcomes.
- Participates in all required state and federal on-site surveys.
- Creates and conducts departmental education/training sessions for the team.
- Selects and implements valid and reliable instruments and metrics to measure processes and outcomes.
- Provides staff recognition through positive reinforcement and constructive feedback
- Consult with doctors and other healthcare professionals as needed
- Counsel, develop and evaluate the performance and clinical practice of staff.
- Uses evidenced based practice and performance improvement to guide clinical decision-making
Qualifications
Education
- Masters Degree, Nursing or relevant field (Required) or
- Bachelors Degree, Nursing and enrolled in Masters in Nursing or relevant field program (Required) or
Experience
- 3-4 years Clinical nursing experience in Hospital Setting (Required)
- 1 year Educator or teaching experience (Preferred)
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) Upon Hire(Required) and
- CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) Upon Hire(Required) and
- ACLS Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) within 60 Days(Required) and
- PALS Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) Upon Hire(Preferred) and
- Certified Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) - American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN Certification Corporation) Related nursing specialty certification accepted in lieu of CCRN within 60 Days(Required)
