Canada Payroll Tax Specialist
We are seeking a talented individual to join our North America Payroll Tax team at Marsh. This role will be based in Toronto and offers a hybrid work arrangement, requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office.
As a Canada Payroll Tax Specialist, you will play a key role in ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of Canadian payroll tax returns, deposits, and reconciliations using Workday and ADP SmartCompliance. This position offers the opportunity to partner with a strong, established team of payroll professionals while providing guidance and subject matter support to Payroll Tax and Operations Analysts. You will also collaborate closely with senior peers, contributing your expertise to a high-performing environment focused on precision, compliance, and continuous improvement. In addition, this role provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen and apply your research skills in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.
We will count on you to:
- Ensure accurate and timely processing of tax payments for Canadian tax withholdings and unemployment taxes, including periodic tax amendments
- Lead the reconciliation of Federal/State/Local, and/or Provincial tax authorities using Workday and ADP SmartCompliance payroll software
- Correct reconciliation errors where needed and prepare/file amended returns as necessary
- Research and respond to tax agency tax notices; research and respond to complex inquiries related to payroll taxes, deductions and wage withholdings
- Tax team leadership on special projects as required, including: acquisitions, mergers and divestments, internal and external audits, and T4, RL-1, RL-2, T4A and amendment balancing
- Assist with reporting requirements for Canada Statistics
- Ensure documentation of Payroll Tax SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) is maintained and updated periodically
- Ensure day-to-day maintenance through maker/checker and leveraging ServiceNow queue
- Report concerns to North America Payroll Tax Manager when issues are identified and/or escalated
- Ensure consistency in workflow and organizing of folders within team
- Utilize data and reporting from case management system to ensure SLAs (Service Level Agreements) are met and/or exceeded
- Communicate effectively with teams across HR Services to ensure customer service SLAs are met and/or exceeded
What you need to have:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 5+ years of progressive payroll tax and payroll operations experience
- Strong knowledge of Canadian tax regulations, including Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Revenue Quebec (RQ) requirements
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, data analysis, vlookup, etc.) and strong overall computer proficiency
- Excellent problem solving with the ability to work independently
- Strong verbal and written communication, organization, and customer service skills
