Head of Commercial Payer Market Development
What the Role Is
Babylist Health is expanding its footprint with insurance payers — moving beyond DME breast pump coverage into insurance-covered classes and additional services. This role owns growing coverage for our core DME business as well as owning the expansion to classes and services. You will be negotiating and closing contracts with commercial payers, from national players like Aetna and UnitedHealthcare down to smaller regional plans, and finding another way in when a payer's first answer is no. Once a contract is signed, you'll partner closely with our payer operations team to get payers live and patients ordering as fast as possible. The job doesn't stop at the signature — you're expected to build relationships with the program leads and thought leaders inside a payer (maternal health, maternity investment) who can turn a contract into a broader partnership, like preferred DME provider status driving adoption of Babylist's registry and courses.
Who You Are
- You have 8+ years of experience in healthcare and insurance industries within a business development, partnerships, or payer contracting role. Ideally in a startup environment
- You have a deep understanding of the insurance payer landscape, what motivates payers to form partnerships (and how this varies across payers), and how to build a compelling payer value proposition
- You've built and maintained relationships at the highest levels with large national payers, including Aetna and UnitedHealthcare, with the ability to move beyond transactional contracting into partnerships that span the full patient experience
- You have an understanding of or direct experience with insurance access strategies in health care services. Bonus if experience is in the DME space
- A plus if you have a background working with or at a commercial insurance payer
- Ability to build relationships and secure contracts with all types of insurance payers, from big commercial payers to smaller local payers
- You excel at building relationships with key decision makers and have a proven track record of success in developing payer segment strategies and securing in-network access across different payer types
- You love solving problems and have tremendous perseverance and resilience to try new things and work on it until you get it right
- You are strategic partner to both internal and external stakeholders, with the ability to create win-win relationships that lead to positive business outcomes
- You are passionate about the healthcare industry and have a proven track record of success in insurance payer access
- You thrive in an environment that values collaboration over individual achievement
- Bachelors or equivalent work experience required
How You Will Make An Impact
- Develop and execute a plan to gain direct in-network access to major national and local payers for the DME breast pump business and new lines of business including insurance covered classes, lactation, and doula care
- Build and maintain strong relationships with insurance payers of all sizes, including big commercial payers as well as smaller niche payers
- Negotiate contracts with insurance payers and ensure contracts are being managed and maintained effectively
- Work closely with the cross functional teams including dedicated payer operations team to ensure we have the operational processes and capabilities in place to onboard and service patients insured by payer partners
- Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the insurance payer landscape, including industry trends, competitive offerings, and market dynamics
- Build strategic partnerships with payers, health systems, and OB GYN providers to create awareness and adoption of Babylist Health
- Provide strategic recommendations around additional products and services to add on the Babylist Health roadmap including insurance access plan for the same
