Assists the professional staff with the delivery of services to patients in a variety of settings.

Provides direct patient care, and/or one to one observation to selected patients under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. Assists, escorts and transports patients.

A. Clinical/Technical/Service

  1. Assists the professional staff with the delivery of services to patients in a variety of settings
  2. Provides direct patient care, including all vital signs, pulse oximetry and assist with ADL.
  3.  Performs Patient observations: Safety and Constant/One to One observation to selected patients under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse
  4. Assists, escorts and transports patients
  5. Performs and assists with designated procedures, using aseptic technique as indicated
  6. Assists with patients’ examinations
  7. Obtains and provides nourishment for patients
  8. Provides minor treatments as directed - dressings, application of ace bandages, applications of slings and ice, pediculosis
  9. Assists with application of casts and splints
  10. Prepares, adjusts and teaches the use of crutches and canes
  11. Is cognizant of the need for safety devices; applies or assists with application
  12. Collects specimens, performs venipunctures and fingersticks for blood glucose
  13. Obtains EKGs as ordered
  14. Assists patients to get needed services by communicating those needs to the nurse
  15. Communicates information to patients, families and visitors
  16. Provides post-mortem care
  17. Sets-up, stocks, and maintains examining rooms
  18. Performs eye irrigations
  19. Maintains  BCLS  certification as required by EMS standards
  20. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area

    1. Identifies physical, behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age group
    2. Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment
    3. Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs
    4. Uses communication techniques which are age appropriate

B. Organizational/Managerial

  1. Participates in the Department of Nursing Quality Improvement Program/activities
  2. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information

C. Educational/Professional Development

  1. Participates in the development of other staff members
  2. Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements

D. Communication/Relationships

  1. Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others
  2. Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community
  3. Adheres to Mount Sinai  Morningside/West legal and ethical standards
  4. May be required to perform other duties as assigned

  • Graduate from an approved Medical Assistant Program or equivalent. 
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree desirable.
  • Medical Assistant experience preferred
  • Spanish speaking preferred,
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend English.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification
