JOB SUMMARY

The Clinical Nutrition Supervisor under the direction of the Trinity Hospitality Services, Food & Nutrition Services (THS-FANS) Regional Clinical Nutrition Manager (RCNM), MercyOne North Iowa and MercyOne New Hampton Directors of Food and Nutrition Services, Directors of Food and Nutrition Services, is responsible for all functions and management pertaining to the nutritional care of the patient, clinical duties of all clinical dietitians. This position is responsible for assisting the Nutrition Services Director and the Regional Manager, Clinical Nutrition and Wellness with clinical leadership, coordination, quality, risk management, productivity and human resource management of all clinical dietitians and diet office functions.  Represents the Nutrition Services Departments in multidisciplinary health care teams and is the primary liaison responsible for maintaining effective communication and cooperation with physicians and other healthcare professionals to achieve patient care goals. Responsible for managing compliance with all regulatory agency requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Adheres to the principles of caring and expected behaviors outlined in MercyOne North Iowa Model of Caring and Trinity Health's Code of Conduct, fostering a climate where all customers are treated in a manner consistent with Mercy Medical Center's Mission and Values. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior. Monitors, evaluates and prioritizes all clinical nutrition activities within the hospitals and contracted dietetic services.  Includes inpatient and outpatient nutrition services, shared service contracts, and community wellness and nutrition programs. Understands, articulates and ensures compliance with patient safety practices mandated by national, state and local regulatory agencies. Participates as needed in selecting, training, orientating, or other tasks with diet office staff.  Schedules and supervises clinical unit staffing.  Trains, conducts applicable rounding/observation and manages and evaluates performance of all staff. Ensures the provision of medical nutrition therapy and the nutrition care process including patient screening, assessment, diagnosis, intervention, education and menu processing according to established department policies. Assists with the development of standards of performance and job competencies; evaluates performance and responsible for personnel development.  Oversees clinical dietitian documentation and implementation of medical nutrition therapy using the electronic medical record. Conducts yearly clinical competency assessments on all Clinical Dietitians. Develop and maintain staffing patterns in order to maximize staff productivity based on patient needs; adjust schedules and work assignments based on these needs and/or staff availability and competency levels.  Monitor productivity/labor on a daily basis and make staffing adjustments based on patient needs and budgeted hours.  Responsible for collecting data and submitted for productivity benchmarking. Assist Nutrition Services Director with the planning and processing of high quality, safe and nutritious patient meals.  Assist with evaluating contract dietetic services staffing hours, costs and revenue determining if the contracts align with department goals. Administers and communicates policies accurately and clearly to personnel. Conduct regular staff meetings with Clinical Dietitians work group.  Includes regular communication and meetings when appropriate with Diet Office staff. Facilitates and promotes cooperative and collaborative relationships among disciplines and departments to ensure consistent, effective and efficient delivery of patient care. Assist and support the Workplace Wellness Initiatives, through program development, nutritional education, working with the department chef developing healthy options within the cafeteria and for patients. Assists with implementation of Regional Clinical Nutrition Initiatives Active participant and collaboration in hospital meetings and committees. Able to performs the duties of a Clinical Dietitian and all aspects of Medical Nutrition Therapy including, but not limited to, clinical nutrition assessment, follow-up, education, documentation and performing the nutrition-focused physical exam.  Familiar with Malnutrition Criteria. Performs and is competent in the Nutrition-Focused Physical Exam Functions as the Department of Nutrition Services clinical nutrition expert and technical advisor to clinical staff, directors and managers throughout MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center. Covers patient care and contract services, on an as needed basis only, assessing complex patients’ nutritional status independently and appropriately following Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics evidenced based practice guidelines. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with managerial colleagues, and other administrative and clinical resources to facilitate timely resolution of issues/problems/concerns, to promote optimal planning and to ensure effective integration and coordination of Nutrition Services to meet the patient needs. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development, and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of MercyOne – North Iowa and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Cultural Beliefs. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures.  Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment. Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or department head.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

 Serves on hospital committees and groups to represent nutrition entity.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduate from a four-year university with major in dietetics, food and nutrition, or equivalent field of study required.  Master's Degree or Advanced Certification (CNSC, CDE, CSP, CSG, CSSD, CSR or CSO) preferred. Graduate of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognized dietetic internship program required. Current license in the state of Iowa and registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration Certification in area of specialty or advanced degree is desirable.

Experience:  3 or more years of previous job-related experience. Leadership or supervisory experience for 1 year is strongly preferred.

Special Skills and Competencies: Ability to form effective, professional working relationships with patients and health care providers. Ability to administer an accurate, organized, and professional educational program. Completes Lean 101 training within 9 months of hire. Certification in Practical Problem Solving within 18 months of hire. Completes the following mandatory courses (check all that apply). Experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status.

Must provide proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training prior to employment or within 6 months of hire and maintain current status per State of Iowa guidelines

Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Completes MANDT Training within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
