Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Medical Oncology GI Oncology – Colorectal
Medical Oncology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Gastrointestinal Oncology Care Team, with a primary focus in colorectal cancer.
This is an exciting opportunity to practice at the top of scope within a highly collaborative adult Medical Oncology outpatient practice. The NP or PA will care for adult patients with gastrointestinal malignancies as part of the GI care teams, primarily supporting patients with colorectal cancers while also providing cross-coverage across GI Oncology.
NPs and PAs see patients at initial consultation and follow established patients throughout the disease course, helping guide treatment plans in close collaboration with medical oncologists. The NP or PA manages treatment-related toxicities for patients receiving standard and research-based cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, immunotherapies, and targeted therapies. The role also includes holistic care and support across all phases of illness, including ordering curative-intent therapy, survivorship care, management of long-term treatment-related toxicities, assessment for cancer regression, progression, or recurrence, clinical trial participation, and end-of-life care.
The colorectal patient population offers a dynamic and rewarding opportunity to participate in complex multidisciplinary care coordination, working closely with colleagues in surgery, radiation oncology, and other specialties. In the metastatic patient population, Mayo Clinic is a leader in developing multidisciplinary care plans with curative-intent treatment approaches. This work requires curiosity, adaptability, and a commitment to learning cutting-edge approaches to oncology care.
Due to the complexity and breadth of the patient population, the ideal NP or PA candidate will bring a strong commitment to caring for challenging and medically complex patients, along with excellent communication, teamwork, clinical judgment, and assessment skills. This is meaningful, high-impact work that requires diligence, resilience, and sustained engagement in a fast-paced specialty practice.
The NP or PA will work within the GI Oncology Tumor Group. The GI group includes 6 care teams comprising consultants, NPs, PAs, RNs, and other allied health team members. These teams are subdivided into the following subspecialty focus areas: colorectal, gastroesophageal, pancreatic, hepatobiliary, and neuroendocrine cancers, with the goal of streamlining patient care and supporting clinical trial enrollment. Cross-coverage across GI malignancies is expected to support patient needs and team-based care.
The NP or PA has a central role on the team, providing continuity for patients, serving as a provider resource for nursing, and helping coordinate care across multidisciplinary teams. Our NPs and PAs are true experts in their areas of focus and are valued members of a collegial, hardworking, and mission-driven team.
Once established clinically, the oncology team is highly supportive of mentoring NPs and PAs in academic, research, quality, and education pursuits. We take pride in working with individuals to identify their professional development interests and foster meaningful growth. We strive to see our advanced practitioners excel in clinical practice while contributing to the broader missions of research, quality improvement, and education.
