Senior Engineering Manager, Infrastructure
Laravel is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our all-remote Laravel Cloud Infrastructure organization. Our mission is to improve the experience of developers everywhere in the world. To do that, we don’t just build beautiful software products – we invest in a world-class infrastructure foundation and the people who make it possible.
We’re taking on ambitious and exciting infrastructure challenges, and we’re looking for a leader who can help the organization succeed in that mission. This role is about developing leaders, guiding technical direction across multiple teams, and creating an environment where engineers can do their best work.
In this role, you will lead the Infrastructure organization responsible for our recently announced Laravel Cloud platform – a fully managed infrastructure platform built for developers and teams who just want to ship their next big idea, relentlessly optimized for Laravel and PHP. As the Senior Engineering Manager, you’ll guide the organization’s execution through a team of Engineering Team Leads, support their growth and the growth of their teams, and ensure that our platform is reliable, scalable, and delightful for the developers who depend on it.
Location: Between EU West and US East for optimal collaboration with the team.
About the Role
We’re looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Infrastructure organization – the group responsible for the foundation that powers our developer-focused cloud platform. You’ll lead through four Engineering Team Leads, each owning their own area and team of senior infrastructure engineers, across platform components spanning Kubernetes (EKS), AWS, networking, storage, observability, and internal infrastructure services.
This includes oversight of our Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practice, led by our SRE Team Lead, covering on-call, incident response, and the reliability engineering work that keeps the platform available and performant for our customers.
You’ll partner closely with product, engineering, and leadership to deliver a platform developers love, while driving technical excellence, operational maturity, and organizational health across the teams you lead.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and grow a distributed team of Engineering Team Leads, including our Infrastructure and SRE leads
- Set the standard for how those leads manage, develop, and grow their own engineers
- Foster an engineering culture that emphasizes autonomy, ownership, reliability, and continuous improvement across the organization
- Support career development through 1:1s, goal setting, and regular feedback – both with your direct reports and, by extension, the wider organization
- Collaborate with leadership to shape strategy, resourcing, and roadmap for the infrastructure organization
- Own reliability, availability, and performance outcomes across the platform, including our SRE practice (on-call, incident response, SLOs/SLIs)
- Drive adoption of infrastructure best practices such as GitOps, Infrastructure as Code, and security
- Partner with product to help shape and define requirements for upcoming projects
- Communicate technical direction and priorities clearly with leads, engineers, leadership, and stakeholders
- Work closely with other engineering leaders to ensure seamless platform experiences
How We’ll Know You’re Succeeding (The 12-Month View)
In Your First 30 Days
You will have gotten a clear picture of the State of the Union of the Infrastructure organization and platform – including direct time with each Engineering Team Lead and their teams. Based on this insight, you will have formed strong opinions and a concrete plan on how to best work with the leads and leadership going forward.
In Your First 90 Days
You will have made a significant impact in your role. This will include having influenced and potentially restructured the organization’s processes, identified key pain points the teams are experiencing, and communicated these clearly with all stakeholders. At this point, you will have also begun actively working on talent retention, development, and acquisition initiatives across the organization.
In Your First 12 Months
You will have taken clear, decisive ownership of the Infrastructure engineering organization, including its SRE practice. You will have successfully put clear, effective processes in place for the organization to succeed, and developed your Engineering Team Leads into stronger leaders in their own right. Ultimately, you will have instilled a level of professionalism that makes the organization perform at an elite level without it seeming chaotic, resulting in a reliable, scalable, and delightful Laravel Cloud platform.
