Details of Research Project: 

The fellow’s main research project would be part of a funded 5-year grant from the NIMH focused on the neural basis of depression. Successful applicants will use nonhuman primate behavior, electrophysiological recordings, chemogenetic activation, fMRI, and deep brain stimulation to investigate the how frontal cortex and interconnected structures are involved in controlling affective behavior in the context of depression.

 

Technical Duties: (include any protocols)

 

The applicant will be required to train non-human primates to perform behavioral tasks, record neural activity, conduct neurosurgeries with the laboratory team, and acquire structural and functional MRI data. They will also need to be well versed in analysis of high-dimensional neural data.

Educational and other Requirements for the position: PhD in neuroscience or psychology

 

Experience Required: >3 years working with non-human primates in a neuroscience setting.

 

Goals/Outcomes of the Research Project: The goal of the research project is to determine how one part of the frontal cortex, the subcallosal anterior cingulate cortex is involved in depression and how treatments directly targeted to this area directly ameliorate negative mood.
