Accountabilities:

    The AVP, ESL & Managed Care Programs will lead underwriting strategy, portfolio management, and program development activities while supporting profitable growth and strong client relationships. This role requires deep technical expertise, strategic thinking, and the ability to collaborate across underwriting, actuarial, operations, and business development teams.

    • Develop and execute strategies that support profitability, retention, and premium growth objectives.
    • Manage employer stop loss, medical excess, and ancillary insurance/reinsurance programs from underwriting, product, and portfolio perspectives.
    • Evaluate portfolio performance using profitability metrics and implement improvements aligned with business goals.
    • Perform complex underwriting reviews and make independent decisions within established authority guidelines.
    • Apply underwriting principles, risk management practices, and regulatory requirements to ensure compliant business operations.
    • Maintain and improve underwriting tools, processes, guidelines, and reporting frameworks.
    • Establish and monitor data flows from clients to evaluate performance against targets and business plans.
    • Develop annual business objectives for assigned partners and identify opportunities for growth within existing relationships.
    • Evaluate new business and renewal submissions while providing technical guidance and strategic recommendations.
    • Build strong knowledge of products, market trends, competitive practices, and emerging industry opportunities.
    • Support product development initiatives by considering distribution, underwriting, and compliance requirements.
    • Coordinate reinsurance strategies, including negotiations of renewal terms and contractual agreements.
    • Lead cross-functional projects, strategic planning initiatives, and training efforts.
    • Build strong relationships with clients, internal stakeholders, and industry partners.
    • Potentially lead and mentor a small team as responsibilities expand.
    • Requirements:

      The ideal candidate is an experienced insurance and underwriting leader with a strong background in employer stop loss, managed care programs, and reinsurance solutions. This professional should combine technical underwriting expertise with strategic leadership, communication skills, and strong business judgment.

      • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent professional experience required; advanced degree preferred.
      • 10+ years of relevant insurance experience required.
      • 8+ years of employer stop loss underwriting experience preferred.
      • 2+ years of experience with reinsurance structures, underwriting, and contract negotiations preferred.
      • Advanced knowledge of employer stop loss underwriting at both case and portfolio levels.
      • Strong understanding of underwriting philosophy, techniques, regulatory requirements, and industry practices.
      • Experience with insurance and reinsurance products across multiple operational areas.
      • Strong understanding of underwriting reporting, financial concepts, accounting principles, IFRS, and statutory reporting.
      • Strong analytical, mathematical, and risk management capabilities.
      • Excellent negotiation, influencing, and relationship-building skills.
      • Strong written, verbal, and presentation abilities.
      • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining quality and attention to detail.
      • Strong organizational and project management skills in a fast-paced environment.
      • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
      • Experience with underwriting systems such as Connexure or Kevin Ugan System is a plus.
      • Willingness and ability to travel as required.
