Senior Resident Engineer
Job Description
Dewberry’s Construction Management Services is seeking a Senior Resident Engineer to work on project assignments in the Washington DC Metropolitan area. The position will be located in the Gainesville, VA office, but will report to a project site, or multiple project sites daily. The successful candidate will be assigned to fulfill leadership positions on various construction projects with at least 10 years of Resident Engineering experience including transportation and/or water/wastewater infrastructure projects. A successful candidate must have their PE license in DC, VA or MD, excellent communications and client relations skills, the ability to manage a large staff of field personnel, and work as a team player.

Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee construction projects involving bridges, structures, roadways, and other transportation infrastructure, including projects within rights-of-way, ensuring compliance with plans, specifications, contract documents, codes, and DOT requirements.
- Supervise and lead project staff, inspectors, and consultants; organize project teams, monitor staffing needs, and provide daily on-site construction management and inspection oversight.
- Manage project budgets, CPM schedules, contractor performance, production rates, and overall project execution, including preparation, negotiation, and administration of change orders. Including the ability to establish and manage project budgets, monitor financial performance, and support contract administration activities.
- Analyze and interpret project plans, specifications, constructability issues, contract language, RFIs, work orders, and claims to support project delivery and resolve technical or contractual
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, design engineers, utility companies, and other stakeholders to ensure timely review of submittals, issuance of RFI responses, and successful project execution.
- Create, review, evaluate, and manage contractor and project schedules in accordance with contract requirements.
- Lead and facilitate project meetings, including pre-construction conferences, utility coordination meetings, progress meetings, and other stakeholder coordination sessions, while communicating critical issues, risks, and project updates.
- Review inspection reports, material testing results, and construction activities; resolve quality-related issues and discrepancies to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Prepare independent construction cost estimates and review, negotiate, and recommend contractor progress, partial, and final payments.
- Build and maintain positive client relationships and assist with the preparation of proposals and professional services agreements.
- Oversee project document control and records management, ensuring accurate, complete, and timely transfer of project records to the designated records management system.
Required Skills & Required Experience
- 10+ years’ experience as Resident Engineer on experience managing complex construction projects, including transportation, railway, station, bridge, roadway, facility, infrastructure, and/or water/wastewater projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Engineering or closely related field.
- DC, VA or MD Professional Engineer (PE) License required
- Construction Management Association of America Certified Construction Manager (CCM) preferred
- Experience with DDOT, VDOT and/or MSHA specifications, standards, manuals, construction inspection practices, materials testing, and related certifications preferred.
- Previous leadership or supervision experience of large teams of construction management, inspection, and field personnel while fostering a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
- Strong client relationship management skills and the ability to effectively coordinate with owners, contractors, engineers, regulatory agencies, and other project stakeholders.
- Excellent computer, smartphone, tablet, database, and electronic data management skills, with the ability to learn and implement new technologies and reporting tools.
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint) and construction/project management software such as e-Builder, Smartsheet, Box, Teams, contract management systems, and other project information management platforms.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Salary Range
The projected range for this position is $175,000 to $210,000 annually. Depending upon other factors, i.e., skills, experience, location, market conditions, the range may vary slightly. These ranges are for NY only.
