The Specialist, Crew Advanced Analytics is a strategic, results-driven role reporting to the Director of Crew Planning, responsible for advancing the team’s use of advanced data science and machine learning to solve complex crew planning challenges. The role focuses on designing and scaling reusable data science assets, applying a range of analytical techniques—from descriptive through prescriptive modeling—to optimize areas such as crew reserve models, schedule design and impacts to operational resiliency, and crewing productivity. Acting as a bridge between business, IT, and engineering teams, the incumbent delivers end-to-end solutions from concept to production, ensures adherence to technical standards, and drives innovation by leveraging emerging technologies and large, complex data sets to generate actionable insights that support key operational initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Develop high quality, intuitive analytic solutions to complex business problems such as crew reserve optimization models to drive operational efficiency and assess the cost-benefit implications of proposed solutions
- Foster innovation of analytics projects of different varieties including strategy, advanced modeling, and data mining, providing full oversight of engagement structure, team management, and deliverables for team
- Collaborates with various stakeholders and subject matter experts across Air Canada to identify new ways of leveraging data to assist with analytical needs and project insights to influence business priorities and strategic initiatives such as Pilot Position Assignment alignment with Network Strategy
- Provide a branch view of analytical opportunities to help business lines make informed operational decisions for current and future business needs
- Lead the definition and governance of key metrics, drive the vision and building of the Crew Analytics team
- Follows best practices for future reuse in the form of accessible, reusable patterns, templates and code bases.
- Act as a process improvement leader in matters of data science and analytics; maintain awareness of best practices to improve crew efficiency, crewing productivity and/or correct model deficiencies
- Provide strategic, technical, and project leadership for the data explorations of new and existing data sources to maximize value creation and innovations.
- Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies to drive innovation in data analytics practices.
- Demonstrate initiative, a strong commitment to achieving meaningful results, and act on opportunities to create value.
- Hire, manage, develop, mentor and support a highly skilled team of data engineering and reporting analysts
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative or technical field (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering); a Master’s or PhD degree is considered an asset.
- 5+ years of experience in data science, advanced analytics, or applied machine learning roles, with exposure to business-focused analytics.
- Strong experience working with large, complex datasets and proficiency in SQL and Python and other relevant programming languages.
- Experience applying statistical modeling and machine learning techniques, such as regression-based models, tree-based models and optimization approaches.
- Foundational understanding of demand forecasting, elasticity modeling, promotional analysis, or scenario modeling.
- Familiarity with analytics development within Databricks and the Azure data ecosystem is considered an asset.
- Strong proficiency in data visualization tools such as Power BI (preferred) or Tableau.
- Ability to communicate analytical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proactive mindset with the ability to work through ambiguity, take initiative, and suggest new analytical approaches or opportunities to improve business outcomes.
- Demonstrate punctuality and dependability to support overall team success in a fast-paced environment.
