Job Description
As a Embedded Systems Software Developer at OTTO By Rockwell Automation, you will develop software components to make our robots function and easily diagnose issues and exemplify proper Software Development Life Cycle practices from beginning to end. Your code will run on the robots and control mission-critical functionality such as battery management, sensor drivers, motor control, and hardware diagnostics. The team is looking for a true Mechatronics engineer with a focus on the software side of things. This includes bare metal firmware, PLC code, device drivers for external components, and application layer components in Linux. You will involve yourself with the initial proof of concept and bring up new robot hardware platforms. You will need to be aware of functional safety possible effects in an industrial environment, and how to implement and verify safety functions. You will report to Manager, Platform and will work Hybrid in Kitchener, ON.
Primary responsibilities:
- Prototyping and Bring-up of new AMR platforms.
- Architect, and implement software, ranging from low-level robot control firmware, PLC application code, PC SW drivers for external controllers, and enhanced interactive diagnostics.
- Architecture and design of Industrial control systems, especially their software, to be compliant with relevant standards such as ISO 13849, ANSI B56.5, IEC 61508 and others.
- Integrate complex electronics and control systems with Autonomous Software.
- Document system-level architectures, and contributing to knowledge bases for debugging complex issues.
- Coordinate feature requirements between Software, Hardware, and Production teams.
- Provide expert level debugging of our robots to support Client Success, Field Services, and internal Test and Manufacturing teams.
- Review and release the software and configurations of multiple industrial devices.
- Write, implement, and debug validation test plans for system and safety functionality
The Essentials : You will Have:
- Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Years of Relevant Work Experience.

The Preferred: You might also have:
- Typically requires 2+ years of related experience.
- JIRA project and task management
- Robot configuration in a Linux environment
- Support on-site troubleshooting and commissioning of prototype robotic vehicles at customer facilities. This role may require occasional travel (less than 5%).
- Participate in technical planning sessions, both internally and with partner/client involvement
- Support risk assessment and FMEDA activities
- Programming and Configuration of 3rd party programmable devices, including PLCs from multiple vendors, Safety Scanners and Lidars, and other industrial devices
- 3+ years of experience working with C++ and Python
- Electronics and mechatronics prototyping and debugging skills (breadboarding, oscilloscopes, multimeters)
- Experience of hands-on troubleshooting of electronic and electromechanical systems
- Understanding of sensors and actuators and their error modes, especially motor controllers
- Experience working with different field buses and Point-to-Point digital protocols, especially CAN and Ethernet-based
- Perform root-cause analysis of hardware and software issues from data logs
- Create software development plans, including timelines and test procedures
- Advanced PLC programming and troubleshooting with Siemens and Allen-Bradley automation controllers and tools
- Familiarity with software version control and CI/CD tools, such as Git, Jenkins and Gitlab
Bonus Skills
- Experience with Robot Operating System (ROS).
- Familiarity with Debian-based Linux distributions
- Knowledge of different approaches to the Software Development Lifecycle, especially the V-model
- IT experience in networking, OS configuration and troubleshooting, driver issues
- Experience with industrial electrical design and troubleshooting
- Familiarity with industrial material handling vehicles, such as AGVs, AMRs, SDVs, forklifts, tuggers.
- Working knowledge of aspects of mobile robotics such as perception, planning, controls, and navigation
- P.Eng Accreditation attained or in-progress

For this role, the total target compensation is from $80,000.00 - $120,000.00 CAD Annual. Actual pay will be based on factors such as skills, knowledge, education, and experience.
