The Mechanical Repair Technician – GA is responsible for performing mechanical diagnostics, repairs, adjustments, and component replacements on vehicles within the General Assembly area. This role ensures that all mechanical systems— including chassis, suspension, powertrain interfaces, closures, interior mechanisms, and final-line functional systems—operate according to OEM specifications. The technician plays a key role in minimizing downtime, supporting production flow, and ensuring vehicles meet quality and safety standards before release.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Mechanical Systems Maintenance & Repair:

  • Mechanical Diagnostics — Diagnose mechanical issues related to chassis, suspension, steering, brakes, closures, and interior mechanisms.
  • Component Repair — Repair or replace mechanical components such as hinges, latches, actuators, fasteners, brackets, and linkages.
  • Torque & Fastening — Verify torque values, fastener integrity, and joint quality using approved tools and procedures.
  • Functional Adjustments — Perform adjustments on doors, hoods, liftgates, seats, and other mechanical systems to meet fit, flush, and functional requirements.

Troubleshooting & Breakdown Response:

  • Rapid Issue Resolution — Respond promptly to mechanical breakdowns or disruptions to restore production flow.
  • Root Cause Identification — Use mechanical drawings, schematics, and manuals to diagnose faults.
  • Cross-Functional Troubleshooting — Coordinate with electrical, quality, and production teams for integrated problem resolution.
  • Corrective Actions — Support RCA for recurring mechanical failures and implement corrective actions. o Installation & Commissioning Support:
  • New Equipment Support — Assist in installation, alignment, and testing of new mechanical fixtures, tools, and equipment.
  • Mechanical Upgrades — Support mechanical modifications, retrofits, and improvements approved by engineering.
  • Operational Readiness — Verify mechanical safety, functionality, and readiness before handover to production.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Safety Protocols — Follow all mechanical safety procedures, LOTO requirements, and PPE guidelines.
  • Hazard Reporting — Identify and report mechanical hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
  • Standards Compliance — Ensure compliance with OEM guidelines, company standards, and mechanical safety regulations.

Process & Quality Support: 

  • Process Stability — Ensure mechanical systems operate within defined parameters to support stable GA quality.
  • Quality Checks — Support mechanical checks related to fit, flush, torque, alignment, and functional performance.
  • Issue Escalation — Report abnormalities that may impact quality, safety, or equipment reliability.

Documentation & Coordination:

  • Work Orders — Complete repair work orders, inspection checklists, and fault reports accurately. 
  • Record Keeping — Maintain records of mechanical repairs, inspections, and modifications.
  • Communication — Communicate equipment status and mechanical risks with supervisors and cross-functional teams.

Skills:

Technical Skills:

  • Mechanical Systems Knowledge — Strong understanding of automotive mechanical systems and components.
  • Tool Proficiency — Skilled in using mechanical tools, torque tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Blueprint Reading — Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and assembly schematics.
  • GA Equipment Familiarity — Familiarity with GA equipment, fixtures, and continuous production lines.
  • Basic Electrical Awareness — Basic understanding of electrical interfaces for troubleshooting purposes.
  • Safety Awareness — Strong safety mindset and attention to detail.

Personal Skills:

  • Problem Solving — Structured problem-solving ability under pressure. 
  • Teamwork — Good communication and collaboration skills.
  • Independence — Ability to work independently and in shift environments.
 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Diploma or equivalent; technical training in Mechanical Maintenance preferred.
  • 2–4 years of mechanical maintenance or repair experience in automotive manufacturing or GA environments.
  • Experience with automated assembly equipment, conveyors, and mechanical systems preferred.
  • Mechanical repair certification or trade license (preferred).
  • Willingness to work shifts and support production requirements.
