The Associate Director of Full Stack Engineering is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and delivery management of the NBA platform's software engineering pods. This role manages a multifunctional organization of leads and contractor resources across the platform's full stack - from backend decisioning services through frontend tooling and channel integrations. You are the person who keeps teams unblocked, contractors accountable, and delivery on track across all pods.

The Associate Director, Full Stack Engineering is involved in all stages of software development, including front-end development, back-end development, database integrations, network and hosting management, user interface, user experience, and back-end server management. Decisions are typically related to identifying and resolving complex technical and operational problems within department(s) and could lead multiple managers or highly specialized professional associates.

Use your skills to make an impact

What You'll Own

People and contractor management - direct day-to-day management of software engineering leads and contractor resources across all NBA platform pods; own capacity planning, performance, onboarding, and vendor accountability

  • Pod delivery oversight - maintain visibility across all active pods and workstreams; identify blockers, dependencies, and risks before they become delivery problems

  • Engineering standards - set and enforce consistent engineering practices across pods: code quality, review processes, branching strategy, testing, and documentation

  • Cross-pod coordination - serve as the integration point across software teams; ensure pods are working toward a coherent platform and not drifting in conflicting directions

  • Stakeholder communication - translate delivery status, risks, and tradeoffs into clear updates for the Director and senior leadership; escalate when needed and own the resolution

  • Hiring and team building - partner with the Director on contractor sourcing, staff augmentation decisions, and building the right team composition across pods

  • Vendor and partner management - manage relationships with software delivery contractors and external development partners; hold vendors to SLAs and quality standards

What You'll Need

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3 years in an engineering management or technical leadership role

  • Experience managing contractor-heavy teams and vendor relationships - you know how to hold external resources accountable without direct authority over hiring and firing

  • Background managing multiple concurrent workstreams or pods simultaneously; you can hold context across teams without losing the thread on any of them

  • Strong full stack engineering foundation - you have shipped production software and can credibly evaluate the work your teams are doing

  • Clear, direct communication style with both technical teams and senior leadership

  • Experience working in an agile delivery model with multiple squads running in parallel

  • Comfort using AI productivity tools (Claude, Copilot, or similar) and an expectation that your teams use them too

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field

  • 6 or more years of technical experience

  • 2 or more years of management experience

  • Broad understanding of Information Technology solutions including technologies, platforms, applications and capabilities

  • 3 or more years of IT Management experience

  • Must be passionate about contributing to an organization focused on continuously improving consumer experiences

Strong Plus:

  • Master's degree

  • Experience in healthcare, insurance, or other regulated industries

  • Familiarity with cloud-native architectures (Azure, Kubernetes, Kafka, or equivalents)

  • Background managing teams that include both backend and frontend engineers across a shared platform

  • Experience standing up or scaling a contractor delivery model from scratch
