The Principal Mechanical Engineer will serve as a senior technical contributor within ClearMotion’s mechanical engineering team, taking ownership of complex mechanical design and development challenges across various stages of product lifecycle. This role supports ClearMotion’s active suspension and actuator programs, working closely with cross-functional teams including systems, electronics, software, and program management. The ideal candidate is a self-directed, experienced engineer who brings automotive design rigor, creative problem-solving capability, and the technical depth to operate autonomously on demanding engineering challenges. They will be counted on as a go-to resource for mechanical design decisions and will set a high standard for engineering best practices across the team.

Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field required; Master’s degree preferred. 
Required Skills: 
  1. 8+ years of mechanical engineering experience in an automotive or related product development environment; proficiency in SolidWorks and GD&T; experience with structural simulation tools (SolidWorks Simulation and/or Ansys); ability to perform engineering design calculations (fits, stress approximations, CTE effects, etc.); structured problem-solving experience (8D or equivalent); DFMEA experience; project management capability with ability to plan, track, and independently drive their own engineering workstreams; strong communication skills with supplier and customer-facing experience; comfortable working both independently and within a cross-functional team; Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Preferred Skills:
  1. Experience with actuator or suspension system design in an automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier environment; familiarity with hydraulic or electromechanical system design; exposure to DVP&R processes; experience with Ansys Mechanical for advanced FEA; MatLab or scripting capability for engineering calculations; Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; hands-on mechanical experience (lab, workshop, etc.)
 
 
Travel:
  • Please note, the role may require travel (international possible) to support a wide range of engineering activities at one of our corporate locations, suppliers or customers. Estimate 2-5 trips per year depending on circumstances.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute mechanical design and development of actuator and suspension components using SolidWorks, producing 3D models and 2D drawings with practiced and well versed GD&T; perform structural simulation using SolidWorks Simulation and/or Ansys to validate designs under relevant load cases; run complex tolerance stack analyses and engineering calculations including O-Ring sizing, press-fit analysis, thermal expansion, etc.; drive design-for-manufacturing (DFM) reviews in collaboration with suppliers; support 8D root cause analysis and corrective action efforts with engineering rigor; present design concepts, analysis results, and engineering recommendations to internal teams, suppliers, and customers (OEM’s); operate as a senior technical resource within the team, mentoring less experienced engineers and promoting best practices; work collaboratively across mechanical, systems, and program teams while maintaining the ability to work independently on complex, open-ended engineering problems.
