- Analyzes tooling needs, tool room workload, production demand, and launch schedules to define capacity for new and existing projects.
- Reports actual and projected tool room capacity, tooling availability, machining resources, and project constraints.
- Uses planning tools to interpret forecasts, tool demand, maintenance priorities, and internal or external tool maker support.
Computer-Aided Design & Engineering:
- Leads and reviews CAD-based tooling concepts and detailed designs for fixtures, gauges, jigs, dies, and support equipment.
- Presents tooling, product interface, and manufacturing system designs to align engineering, operations, quality, maintenance, and suppliers.
- Ensures tooling designs address location, clamping, ergonomics, access, repeatability, safety, and equipment compatibility.
Decision Making and Critical Thinking:
- Balances assumptions, constraints, risks, tooling limits, and stakeholder input in project and design decisions.
- Uses past tooling designs, builds, launch issues, and production feedback to prevent repeat failures.
- Assesses design options, supplier proposals, make-versus-buy decisions, and tooling concepts for impact on quality, cost, timing, safety, and manufacturability.
Engineering - MFG:
- Leads problem solving, specifications, and documentation for tooling, fixtures, gauges, dies, equipment, and tool room processes.
- Apply manufacturing engineering principles to design and sustain tooling for machining, fabrication, assembly, inspection, and production.
- Coordinates tool installation, tryout, validation, maintenance readiness, and handoff to production and tool room teams.
- Escalates critical tooling, manufacturability, capacity, or production issues with clear recommendations.
Project Management:
- Estimates tooling project cost, design effort, tool room hours, supplier lead times, and implementation timing.
- Plans, staff, organizes, and monitors tool design, build, refurbishment, and manufacturing improvement projects.
- Identifies risks in design readiness, suppliers, capacity, materials, machining, validation, and launch; creates contingencies.
Robotics/Computer Controlled Machinery:
- Integrates tool design requirements with robotic cells, CNC equipment, and computer-controlled manufacturing processes.
- Supports flexible automation requiring precise tooling, fixturing, part location, sensing, and repeatability.
- Research equipment, robot, CNC, fixture, and supplier options for tooling strategies and business cases.
