Environmental Protection Specialist

These positions are located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Anadarko, Oklahoma; Farmington, New Mexico; Fort Duchesne, Utah; Fort Washakie, Wyoming; Lakewood, Colorado; New Town, North Dakota; Pawhuska, Oklahoma; Phoenix, Arizona; Washington, District of Columbia; Whiteriver, Arizona. As Environmental Protection Specialist, GS-0028, your typical work assignments may include, but not limited to: Serves as a Bureau expert in ensuring compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and other environmental laws. This includes interpreting and applying relevant regulations, executive orders, or policies related to Division programs on Indian trust lands across the country. Evaluates the adequacy of Bureau-wide compliance with environmental laws and regulations and recommends systemic improvements or corrective actions with Bureau-wide effect. Prepares environmental technical and policy documents, as well as correspondence and briefing materials for decision meetings, public inquiries, and congressional requests. Reviews, analyzes, and provides recommendations to tribal entities regarding a broad array of environmental related reports and documents, including site assessments, tribal codes, and cost estimates. Leads public meetings and hearings, delivers expert testimony, and responds to public and Congressional inquiries on significant environmental compliance matters arising in any assigned program area. Applies advanced scientific expertise and state-of-the-art methodologies to resolve the most difficult and novel analytical questions confronting Bureau environmental programs, including those involving unprecedented legal, scientific, or intergovernmental variables.
