Hurricane Mesa Test Facility (HMTF) is a unique test site tasked with validating ejection seat systems and subsystems. Tests vary from sled track tests to seat-aircrew separation, braking system acceptance testing, and other energetic and subsystem performance tests. Sled tests involve state-of-the-art anthropometric manikins (akin to automotive industry manikins) at ejection velocities from zero airspeed/zero altitude to beyond the speed of sound (760+ mph ground speed).

This position is for a Test Support Engineer.  This person will be responsible for supporting test setup and providing general technical support for all onsite test programs.  The role will work with customers, both internal and external, on developing and supporting tests and other activities at HMTF.  Must possess ability to coordinate and lead activities as well as strong organization and analytical skills.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Work as part of an engineering team in developing, testing, and qualifying various aircraft escape systems and components.

  • Develop new and update existing operating procedures for test activities and facility operations

  • Operating various camera systems, including Ametek Phantom hi-speed cameras to capture test events in fixed positions and tracking moving objects

  • Handle energetic propulsion devices, such as high velocity aerial rocket motors (HVARs) used for sled propulsion and smaller explosive initiator devices used in subsystem components

  • Collaborate with other engineers on setup, design, fabrication, and modification of test fixtures and test articles in support of test programs and customer requirements

  • Providing support for various maintenance and site improvement projects

  • Support building, maintaining and upgrading test equipment and fixtures

QUALIFICATIONS YOU MUST HAVE:

  • Strong analytical skills including knowledge of physics and dynamics

  • Presenting technical subject matter to internal and external customers

  • Experience with rocket sled track operations

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field

QUALIFICATIONS WE PREFER:

  • Experience with high-speed video systems and other camera systems

  • Experience with energetic materials such as CAD/PAD, rockets, and/or explosives

  • Experience working in R&D, test environments or ejection seats/escape systems

The salary range for this role is 68,900 USD - 131,100 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
