Senior Software Engineer Fullstack
Preferred Location: Ottawa
Reports to: CTO
Type: Full-Time
The Role
This is a senior full-stack role building systems end to end — backend telemetry ingestion and data processing, the operator-facing dashboards, and the embedded and edge integrations in between.
What makes it interesting is the environment: forward-deployed, denied/degraded/intermittent/limited (DDIL) conditions where the network drops, bandwidth is scarce, and a wrong number on an operator's screen has real consequences. You'll shape the architecture, work directly with the CTO and our hardware and embedded teams, and see your work reach the field in days, not quarters.
What You’ll Do
Build backend services and APIs that ingest, normalize, and serve telemetry and mission data, and design the data model and query patterns (SQL/NoSQL) for low-latency access and efficient archival.
Build the operator-facing interfaces and real-time dashboards that turn high-rate telemetry into clear, actionable system state — data-dense visualization that holds up under field conditions and time pressure.
Integrate with sensors, embedded systems, and edge compute nodes, designing for fault tolerance and graceful degradation on bandwidth-constrained, unreliable links.
Set up the automated testing, CI/CD, and observability (logs, metrics, traces) that keep releases repeatable and field diagnostics possible.
Shape technical direction — write and review design docs, make the architectural calls, and support the engineers around you through code review.
Work with embedded and mechanical engineers on interfaces and end-to-end performance, and support field deployments directly (some travel to sites), folding operator feedback into fast iterations.
What You’ll Bring
5+ years building and operating production backend and frontend systems, with solid architectural judgment.
Strong production experience in Python and JavaScript/TypeScript, and the judgment to write clean, testable, maintainable code.
Front-end depth building real-time, data-dense interfaces — rendering live telemetry and system state into clear operator views, where visualization and UX judgment matter more than pixel-perfect styling.
Depth in data: SQL and relational modeling, and a feel for storage and query design under real latency and volume constraints.
Hands-on experience integrating with hardware or working closely with embedded teams — sensor data, constrained bandwidth, fault-tolerant data flows.
Comfort in ambiguous, forward-deployed settings: a pragmatic, low-ego problem-solver who debugs under pressure and iterates quickly.
Eligibility for a Canadian security clearance (Canadian citizenship an asset). No defence background required — we'll teach you the domain..
