Senior Tax Specialist ( US & Canada )
Job Description
Job Responsibilities:
U.S. Sales & Use Tax:
- Prepare, review, and timely file U.S. sales and use tax returns across the company’s multi-state nexus footprint.
- Maintain the sales tax compliance calendar, coordinate payments, and perform related account reconciliations.
- Research and resolve state and local sales tax notices, inquiries, and audits.
- Maintain and update taxability matrices, nexus determinations, and customer exemption certificates.
- Partner with Billing, AR, and IT teams on tax coding, invoicing setup, and tax engine configuration (e.g., Avalara, Vertex).
- Monitor U.S. state and local indirect tax law changes and assess business impact.
- Canadian GST/HST
- Prepare and file Canadian federal and provincial indirect tax returns (GST/HST, QST, and similar).
- Reconcile GST/HST payable and receivable accounts on a recurring basis.
- Respond to CRA and provincial tax authority inquiries and manage related documentation and audits.
- VAT/GST Review – International Jurisdictions
- Review VAT/GST returns prepared by outsourced providers or local finance teams across EMEA, APAC, and other applicable jurisdictions prior to filing.
- Identify discrepancies, follow up with preparers, and ensure timely, accurate submission.
- Monitor changes in international VAT/GST rates and regulations that affect the business.
- Support VAT/GST registrations, de-registrations, and maintenance of the global compliance calendar.
Corporate Income Tax Development and Support
- Demonstrate an interest in learning and supporting U.S. and international corporate income tax matters.
- Assist with corporate income tax compliance, tax provision processes, and related projects as needed.
- Support tax planning initiatives, legal entity restructuring projects, and tax research assignments under supervision.
- Participate in cross-functional tax initiatives to broaden overall tax expertise.
Administrative & General Support:
- Assist with indirect tax audits, government information requests, and related documentation.
- Maintain organized tax department files, workpapers, and process documentation.
- Support process improvement and automation initiatives within the indirect tax function.
- Perform other administrative and ad hoc duties as assigned by the Vice President of Tax.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Progressive experience in indirect tax required, with hands-on U.S. sales and use tax compliance experience; Canadian GST/HST and/or international VAT/GST experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with sales tax compliance/automation software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, OneSource) preferred.
- Strong Excel skills; experience with an ERP system (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle) a plus.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple filing deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to work with cross-functional teams and external advisors.
- CPA, CMI, or progress toward a relevant certification is a plus, particularly for candidates at the Manager level.
Working Relationships
This role works closely with the VP of Tax and broader Tax Department, as well as Accounting, Billing, AR, Legal, and IT teams, and interfaces with external tax advisors and government tax authorities.
