We are looking for up to two Mid-level to Senior Environmental Scientists with proven expertise in the sustainable management of agri-food systems and greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes, including GHG accounting and reporting for agricultural practices. The successful candidates will have a strong track record in assessing the impacts of agricultural practices on agri-food systems, evaluating their effects on GHG emissions and removals, and quantifying their contribution to climate change mitigation under different climate and land-use scenarios.

ROLE

The Researcher specializing in the sustainable management of agri-food systems and GHG fluxes will conduct research on the impacts of agricultural practices on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals. The role includes supporting the development and application of GHG accounting and reporting methodologies, as well as comparing bottom-up estimates with top-down approaches. The successful candidate will contribute to scientific analyses, model development, data integration, and the preparation of technical reports and scientific publications within national and international research projects.



RESPONSIBILITIES

The Researcher in Sustainable Management of Agri-food Systems and GHG Fluxes will support the implementation of research and innovation activities related to sustainable agriculture and climate change mitigation by:
 

  • Conducting quantitative assessments of the impacts of agricultural management practices on GHG emissions, carbon sequestration, and other environmental indicators.
  • Developing and applying GHG accounting and reporting methodologies in line with internationally recognized frameworks (e.g. the IPCC Guidelines).
  • Analysing agricultural, environmental, and climate datasets to assess mitigation potential under different management and climate scenarios.
  • Supporting the development and application of models and decision-support tools for evaluating sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Contributing to the design and implementation of research activities within national and European research and innovation projects.
  • Preparing scientific publications, technical reports, project deliverables, and policy briefs.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary and international research teams and engaging with relevant stakeholders.
  • Supporting the preparation of research proposals and contributing to the acquisition of competitive research funding.

REQUIREMENTS 
  • PhD in Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
  • At least 15 years of professional experience in research on GHG fluxes, GHG accounting, or climate change mitigation in the agri-food sector.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

 
DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Please note that this vacancy will be advertised both internally and externally.
  • The successful candidate(s) will be based at the CMCC office in Viterbo.
  • The position is offered under a Coordinated and Continuous Collaboration contract (Co.co.co.), starting in September 2026 for an initial duration of four months, with the possibility of renewal.
  • The gross annual salary for this position ranges from €26,000 to €45,000. The salary offered will be determined based on relevant experience, seniority, and technical expertise, in accordance with objective and gender-neutral criteria.
  • Flexible working hours, in accordance with the organization's internal policies.
  • Support with immigration procedures, if required.
