Engineering Manager (Backend), Consumer Alliance
Join our R&D Tech Hub in Warsaw
We’re building a new R&D Tech Hub in Poland and are looking for people who want to make a real impact from day one. You’ll be part of a globally connected team, helping to shape the culture and ways of working at our new location. This is a hands-on role in a supportive environment, where collaboration, learning, and adaptability are key.
We value practical problem-solving, diverse perspectives, and people who take ownership. If you're ready to contribute to meaningful projects and help lay the foundation for a growing team, we’d like to hear from you.
The role
As the Engineering Manager for the Customer Orders squad at HelloFresh, you will lead the engineering vision and execution for the experience of actually getting a HelloFresh box. Your squad owns how a customer's order comes into being and is tracked: subscription orders created at cutoff and one-time purchases placed on demand, plus order tracking. This is the order-processing backbone that turns a customer's intent into a placed, accurate, trackable order across our global brands.
This is a backend-first role at its core. Order processing is where correctness, resilience, and scale matter most: every order must be accurate, idempotent, and traceable, and the platform must hold up at HelloFresh scale — around 7 million active customers across 18 countries, with close to 1 billion meals delivered a year. At the same time, you and your team will work in a cross-functional squad with product, frontend, and data.
We are looking for a leader who brings deep backend engineering judgement and is energised by collaborating across disciplines to make HelloFresh better. We believe there are many different ways of developing skills and we love diverse experiences! So even if you don't “tick all the boxes” but think you'd thrive in this role, we'd really like to learn more about you.
What you’ll do
- Lead, inspire and grow a cross-functional team of 7 engineers, ensuring smooth delivery and continuous improvement of the Customer Orders systems and tech real estate.
- Own the architecture and reliability of order creation and tracking — subscription orders placed at cutoff and one-time purchases on demand — with a strong focus on correctness, idempotency, data integrity, and operational excellence.
- Drive design decisions for scalable, event-driven services (e.g., Kafka) that place and track high volumes of orders with the highest quality and resilience standards.
- Operate as an engineering leader within a cross-functional squad, partner closely with product and data to deliver end-to-end customer outcomes and make joint decisions across disciplines.
- Champion observability, on-call health, and incident readiness so order creation and tracking stay accurate and available around the clock.
- Actively contribute to hiring and capacity planning, conduct regular code reviews, and mentor engineers.
- Drive a continuous improvement culture and promote the HelloFresh DNA.
What you’ll bring
- You have led a team in an agile environment (5+ engineers), ideally within a cross-functional squad setup.
- You bring 6+ years of hands-on backend development experience.
- Deep experience building scalable microservices and event-driven systems (e.g., Kafka), especially where correctness, idempotency, and data consistency are critical — such as order processing, payments, or other transactional domains.
- Experience designing and operating high-throughput backend systems that other teams and customer-facing surfaces depend on.
- Experience with DevOps practices and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), including observability and production ownership.
- A collaborative mindset and comfort working cross-functionally with product, frontend, and data partners.
- You are an empathetic, strong communicator and active listener.
- You are a self-organized individual who can operate autonomously, solve complex problems, and remove roadblocks.
- You are a humble leader who can motivate a team and drive them to their highest potential.
- Nice to have: experience with React Native.
