You are more than just your resume; you are a reflection of your achievements, the knowledge you've gained, and the personal interests that shape who you are.
Position Overview
Zelis Payments is hiring two Solution Architects to be embedded directly within the Commercial Growth & Partnerships organization. This is not a traditional engineering seat. These roles sit at the intersection of commercial strategy and technical execution — working alongside the teams responsible for identifying, prototyping, and scaling new growth opportunities across Zelis' payments business. The Commercial Growth team focuses on opportunities that need to be built, tested, and then transferred to scale if successful. That work — proof of concepts, partner integrations, fast-follow builds, and technical discovery for larger platform initiatives — moves at commercial speed. These Solution Architects give it dedicated engineering capacity without displacing the shared resources that run and service the core business.
If you are an engineer who wants to be close to the business, build things that have direct commercial impact, and grow into a deeply fungible technical resource — this role was designed for you.
What You'll Do
Proof of Concept Development
Work alongside the commercial team to rapidly prototype and validate new product and integration concepts. You will translate business and partner conversations into working technical demonstrations that can be reviewed, approved, and handed to scale engineering.
- Build PoC integrations with strategic partners across provider network, clearinghouse, and patient financial engagement use cases — translating partner requirements into working technical demonstrations.
- Develop lightweight prototypes for new payment and financial product concepts including flexible and intuitive billing capabilities — fast enough to test the idea, clean enough to hand off to scale engineering.
- Participate in partner and client conversations where your technical perspective shapes the direction of the build.
Partner Integration Builds
Design and build integration enhancements that directly unlock commercial growth. These are well-defined, high-ROI builds where speed matters and you will have the full context of the business case.
- Payment volume expansion across banking rails — building network redundancy and meeting escalating volume commitments with card network and banking partners.
- API and file-based data exchange integrations with EHR platforms, practice management systems, and clearinghouse partners — expanding Zelis' addressable partner market and reducing onboarding friction.
- Automation of integration layers where manual touchpoints limit scale.
Platform Initiative Support
Help ready commercial growth initiatives for scaling within complex platforms — ensuring build requirements are sharper, architecture decisions are pre-socialized, and the path to formal engineering delivery is shorter.
Things you must be able to navigate through include the following examples:
- Bank integrations, payment workflows, ledgering, and leveraging sub-accounts and wallets — designing the full funds flow from capital facility through settlement and repayment.
- A flexible and intuitive billing system — integration and commercial feature development alongside the product team.
Technical Discovery & Architecture
Work directly with product leadership and solution architects to define requirements, validate architectural decisions, and produce the documentation that enables formal engineering intake. Your output from discovery directly shortens the path to production.
What You Bring
Required — Technical Foundation
- 3–5 years of software engineering experience with a strong emphasis on payments, fintech, or healthcare technology.
- Payments orchestration build experience — demonstrated hands-on work with ACH, real-time rails, card payment processing, or payment file architecture.
- API-based integration fluency — REST and event-driven architectures, with experience designing both synchronous and asynchronous data flows.
- File-based integration experience — EDI, healthcare transaction files (835/837), or equivalent healthcare and payments file formats.
- Comfort with funds flow design concepts: subaccount structures, ledger-based accounting, and payment reconciliation.
- Experience operating in a regulated environment where compliance, security, and audit trails are non-negotiable. Familiarity with ACH operating rules, PCI standards, or HIPAA is a plus.
- Experience designing and building scalable APIs, event-driven systems, and platform services in a high-volume transactional environment.
- Onshore, US-based. This role requires real-time collaboration with commercial, product, and technology leadership.
Preferred — Experience & Mindset
- Background in healthcare payments or financial technology — understanding of how payers, providers, and payment intermediaries interact is a meaningful advantage.
- Experience contributing to or reviewing architecture decisions in cross-functional teams.
- Comfort working in ambiguity — these roles operate at the front edge of commercial development where requirements evolve quickly.
- Strong written communication — you will produce documentation, requirements, and technical summaries that business and technology stakeholders both read.
- Experience leveraging advanced AI coding assistants and agents to accelerate delivery while keeping human judgment in control.
- Startup or high-growth environment experience — comfortable with a fast-feedback, high-ownership work model.
- Track record of influencing technical direction across multiple teams without direct authority — able to drive alignment through practical, hands-on guidance.
What This Role Is Not
- Not purely architectural or advisory — this role requires active coding, design, and delivery alongside commercial and technology teams.
- Not a standalone or isolated seat — success depends on working across commercial, product, and technology teams simultaneously.
- Not a "rewrite everything" engagement — this role emphasizes pragmatic, incremental builds that can be validated and handed to scale engineering.
- Not a traditional engineering role — the work is driven by commercial context and partner relationships, not just a backlog.
What You'll Grow Into
These roles are designed for growth. Engineers embedded in the Commercial Growth team — exposed to partner and client conversations, accountable for commercially meaningful outcomes, and working across the full range of Zelis' payment products — develop a breadth of context that is rare in a traditional engineering seat.
Please note at this time we are unable to proceed with candidates who require visa sponsorship now or in the future.
