SAP Plant Maintenance Work Management Architect
Job Family:
Solutions Architecture Consulting
Travel Required:
Clearance Required:
What You Will Do:
Solution Architecture Design
▪ Own and maintain the SAP PM Solution Blueprint: Functional Location (FL) hierarchy, Equipment master structure, notification-to-order workflow design, maintenance strategies, and work center model.
▪ Lead Fit-Gap workshops with client Operations, Asset Management, and IT stakeholders to align SAP standard processes with utility business requirements.
▪ Design end-to-end work order lifecycle workflows: corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance triggers, capital project integration (PS), and permits-to-work.
▪ Define configuration standards and document design decisions in a Business Process Master List (BPML) and Configuration Rationale Log.
▪ Establish the SAP PM data model: asset hierarchy depth, classification/characteristics schema, measuring points, counter readings, and floc/equipment numbering conventions.
Integration Architecture
▪ Define integration architecture between SAP PM and adjacent systems: GIS (Esri ArcGIS / Smallworld), mobile field workforce management (SAP Work Manager, Prometheus, ServiceMax), OMS/DMS, and SCADA.
▪ Collaborate with integration architects on interface specifications: asset record synchronization (GIS → PM), outage-driven notifications (OMS → PM), and field completion callbacks (mobile → PM).
▪ Design the MM-PM interface: MRO material master linkage, BOM structures for rotatable assets, reservation and goods issue workflows, and inventory location assignments.
▪ Define PM-PS integration for capital work: WBS-to-order linkage, cost collector design, settlement rules, and budget monitoring touchpoints.
Data Migration Oversight
▪ Define the asset data migration strategy: source-to-target mapping for functional locations, equipment records, task lists, and measurement documents.
▪ Establish data quality rules and cleansing standards for legacy asset data (Maximo, legacy SAP, custom CMMS) migrated into SAP PM.
▪ Lead data validation and reconciliation activities in mock cutover cycles; own defect resolution for PM data migration issues.
▪ Partner with the cutover lead to define the PM data load sequence and interdependency map (materials before equipment, FL hierarchy before FL records, etc.).
Configuration and Build Governance
▪ Lead or directly perform SAP PM configuration in alignment with the approved solution blueprint; govern configuration requests through the change control board.
▪ Establish and enforce configuration standards across the functional team; conduct structured peer reviews of configuration workbooks.
▪ Oversee development of RICEF objects (Reports, Interfaces, Conversions, Enhancements, Forms) in collaboration with ABAP/technical teams; own functional specifications.
▪ Manage configuration transport strategy across DEV/QAS/PRD landscapes.
Testing and Quality Assurance
▪ Author and review functional test scripts for SAP PM unit testing, system integration testing (SIT), and user acceptance testing (UAT).
▪ Lead resolution of PM-related defects during SIT and UAT cycles; triage and prioritize against go-live criteria.
▪ Validate end-to-end business process scenarios spanning PM, MM, FI-CO, GIS, and mobile touchpoints.
Team Leadership and Knowledge Transfer
▪ Lead a team of 3–8 SAP PM functional consultants across design, build, test, and deploy phases.
▪ Mentor junior consultants on SAP PM configuration, utility work management processes, and client engagement skills.
▪ Support design and deliver role-based training curriculum for client super users and end users (planners, schedulers, field technicians, supervisors).
▪ Produce comprehensive knowledge transfer materials enabling client team self-sufficiency post go-live: configuration guides, process flows, and hypercare runbooks.
What You Will Need:
Bachelor's degree in engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial), Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field required. (Relevant experience may be substituted for formal education or advanced degree)
10+ years of SAP consulting experience with a minimum of 5 years specializing in SAP PM/EAM.
Minimum 3 full-lifecycle SAP PM implementations in a lead architect, solution lead, or functional lead capacity.
What Would Be Nice To Have:
SAP Certified Application Associate – SAP S/4HANA Asset Management or Plant Maintenance (ECC).
Experience with SAP Work Manager (SMP-based mobile solution) or Prometheus Platform for field mobility.
Knowledge of SAP PM integration with Esri ArcGIS Utility Network (UN) or Smallworld GIS, including asset synchronization patterns.
Exposure to SAP Asset Intelligence Network (AIN) or SAP Predictive Asset Insights (PAI) for IoT-driven maintenance scenarios.
Experience with Rise with SAP / S/4HANA Public Cloud asset management configuration in a utility context.
Familiarity with IBM Maximo or Oracle WAMS/WACS data models—critical when leading migrations from these platforms into SAP PM.
Knowledge of NERC CIP, NIST SP 800-82, or IEC 62443 as they apply to OT asset management systems residing in or adjacent to the utility control network.
Proficiency with SAP Solution Manager or Focused Build for test management and requirements traceability.
Experience with utility maintenance standards: NESC, distribution line maintenance programs, transmission maintenance strategies, and gas integrity management programs (DIMP/TIMP) as inputs to PM maintenance plan design.
At least 2 implementations at electric, gas, or water utilities with demonstrated knowledge of utility-specific work management requirements (outage management integration, GIS-driven asset records, regulatory compliance maintenance plans).
Hands-on SAP PM configuration experience across: FL structures, equipment master, maintenance orders/notifications, task lists, maintenance plans/items, scheduling parameters, and work centers.
Direct experience leading data migration efforts for SAP PM asset records (functional locations and equipment) from legacy systems.
Experience designing or implementing SAP PM integration with at least one GIS platform or mobile field workforce solution.
Proficient SAP PM configuration across ECC 6.0 and S/4HANA (on-premise); working knowledge of S/4HANA PM enhancements (Fiori-based maintenance, asset intelligence network concepts).
Strong working knowledge of MM (materials management, MRO procurement, inventory management) and its PM interdependencies.
Understanding of PM-FI/CO cost flows: cost centers, internal orders, WBS elements, settlement rules, and variance analysis.
Familiarity with SAP PM integration options: BAPI/RFC patterns, standard IDocs, BTP integration suite, and third-party middleware (MuleSoft, Dell Boomi).
