We are currently seeking a talented and proactive Model Shop Manager for our Barcelona office, with strong experience in model making, a good eye for detail, and the ability to lead a small in-house workshop.
 
As the Model Shop Manager, you will oversee the production of a variety of physical models (from sketch models to high-quality presentation models) using both digital and manual techniques, in close collaboration with our architectural project teams. You will also ensure that the workshop is functional, organized, and well-maintained.
 
As Model Shop Manager at BIG, you will:
  • Lead the Model Shop team and oversee all model production activities
  • Ensure the workshop and equipment (3D print farm, laser cutter, etc.) are properly maintained and operational
  • Manage a variety of models, from quick sketches to final presentation models
  • Coordinate closely with our Architecture teams on project requirements
  • Mentor interns and junior staff, developing their skills and knowledge of making techniques
  • Implement and improve workshop workflows, safety standards, and quality control
 
Requirements:
  • Strong experience combining different materials and making techniques
  • Advanced skills in 3D modelling (Rhino); expertise is a plus
  • Experience with 3D printing and laser cutting ; knowledge of mould-making, plaster/resin casting, etc.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to high-quality craft
  • Experience handling hand tools and workshop machinery safely
  • Ability to lead a small team, communicate effectively, and take initiative
  • Fluency in English. Spanish is a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience in professional model-making environments
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with designers and project teams
