Accountabilities:
- Review and analyze complex medical records to ensure accurate coding of surgical and anesthesia procedures, including CPT, ICD-10, ASA crosswalks, and modifiers.
- Abstract anesthesia times, events, care team roles, and medical direction details to ensure full and accurate charge capture.
- Code and validate high-complexity cases across specialties such as cardiac, transplant, critical care, and interventional radiology.
- Resolve escalated coding cases, providing clarification, feedback, and support to other coding staff and departments.
- Work and correct complex edits, denials, concurrency issues, and provider time conflicts in alignment with CMS and payer guidelines.
- Collaborate with clinicians and cross-functional teams (RCM, Quality, Education, vendors) to address documentation gaps and improve coding accuracy.
- Monitor trends, meet productivity and audit KPIs, and contribute to reporting and continuous improvement initiatives.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education in health information management or related field preferred.
- 5+ years of complex surgical coding experience and 4+ years of anesthesia coding experience, including high-acuity specialties.
- Active CPC certification required; CANPC certification is a plus.
- Strong expertise in CPT, ICD-10-CM, ASA crosswalk coding, and anesthesia-specific coding guidelines.
- In-depth knowledge of CMS regulations, NCCI edits, LCD/NCD policies, and compliance requirements.
- Experience working with multiple EMRs and charge capture systems, including complex documentation formats.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills with the ability to meet strict production standards.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with clinicians and cross-functional teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook) and general computer systems.
- Ability to work independently, manage high-volume workloads, and mentor less experienced coders.
