Job Summary

The HVAC Equipment Service Technician is a senior-level technical role responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems used in marine and naval environments. This role requires expertise in handling complex HVAC systems installed on ships, submarines, and offshore platforms, ensuring optimal performance under demanding operational conditions.

The technician will work independently or lead small teams, ensuring compliance with maritime regulations, safety standards, and operational readiness requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Expertise

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair advanced HVAC systems, including chilled water systems, DX systems, air handling units, refrigeration systems, and ventilation systems onboard marine vessels.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC equipment in compliance with marine and naval standards.
  • Install and commission HVAC systems on new ship builds, retrofits, and upgrades.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and system layouts.

Marine & Naval Operations

  • Ensure all HVAC systems meet naval and maritime regulatory requirements (e.g., IMO, Navy standards, classification societies).
  • Work in confined spaces and challenging marine environments including engine rooms and offshore installations.
  • Support mission-critical operations by ensuring HVAC reliability and uptime.

Leadership & Coordination

  • Lead and mentor junior technicians and service teams.
  • Coordinate with ship engineers, project managers, and contractors for maintenance and installation activities.
  • Plan and execute service jobs, ensuring timelines and quality standards are met.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere strictly to safety protocols, environmental regulations, and company policies.
  • Conduct risk assessments and ensure safe work practices in hazardous or confined environments.
  • Maintain proper documentation for compliance and audit purposes.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate service logs, maintenance records, and inspection reports.
  • Provide technical reports and recommendations for system improvements.
  • Update equipment history and service databases.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Diploma / BE / Degree in HVAC, Mechanical Engineering, Refrigeration, or related field.

Experience

  • 5–8+ years of experience in HVAC servicing.
  • Minimum 2+ years in marine, offshore, or naval HVAC systems preferred.
  • Experience working on ships, shipyards, or offshore facilities is highly desirable.

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of marine HVAC systems and refrigeration cycles.
  • Familiarity with control systems, PLCs, and automation (preferred).
  • Ability to handle refrigerants as per environmental regulations.
  • Proficiency in reading engineering drawings and technical manuals.
  • Experience with troubleshooting electrical and mechanical components.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • HVAC Certification / Trade License
  • Marine Safety Training (STCW or equivalent)
  • Refrigerant Handling Certification
  • Offshore Safety Certifications (HUET, BOSIET – if applicable)
