Senior Software Engineer - Small Business Technologies

About the Role

We’re growing our technology team and are searching for a Senior Software Engineer to help us modernize our software architecture. When you join us, you’ll use your technical expertise to design, develop, and maintain software components and products that support H&R Block business applications and transform our technology. You’ll serve as the lead role for day-to-day functional tasks in the team, developer support, and maintaining the development environment. Ready to innovate and solve problems in new ways?   • Use tools, languages, coding standards, and best practices to develop new product features and maintain year over year product functionality and enhancements
  • Create and execute unit tests and addresses defects 

  • Work closely with Quality Assurance, User Experience, and other related teams to ensure consistent understanding of requirements and approach 

  • Assist in planning and implementation of a strategic direction for the product 

  • Identify product design features to support scalability, usability, and better performance 

  • Assist and drive technical design and code reviews for all new enhancements and maintenance work delivered by the development team 

  • Understand complex business and functional requirements and produce technical specifications and product requirements 

  • Mentor and coach other team members on the latest technological advances within the current technology used and establish consistent best practices 

Technical Leadership & Ownership

  • Drive technical decisions from concept through production, balancing business outcomes, scalability, maintainability, and delivery timelines.
  • Own complex initiatives spanning multiple systems and teams, proactively identifying dependencies, risks, and mitigation strategies.
  • Champion engineering excellence by establishing development standards, improving architecture, and reducing technical debt.

AI & Agentic Engineering

  • Leverage AI-assisted and agentic development workflows to increase engineering productivity, code quality, testing coverage, and knowledge sharing.
  • Evaluate and implement emerging technologies, including AI and automation capabilities, to improve developer experience and customer outcomes.
  • Design systems that effectively combine business logic, APIs, data services, and intelligent automation to solve customer and operational challenges.

Platform & Architecture Thinking

  • Contribute to architectural decisions that improve system reliability, observability, performance, security, and scalability.
  • Partner with product, design, and engineering leaders to translate ambiguous business needs into sustainable technical solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify systems, eliminate unnecessary complexity, and improve long-term maintainability.

Operational Excellence

  • Lead root cause analysis and resolution efforts for complex production issues while driving preventative improvements.
  • Build and maintain monitoring, alerting, and operational practices that improve service health and customer experience.
  • Advocate for automation across development, testing, deployment, and operational processes.

Mentorship & Culture

  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, experimentation, innovation, and accountability across the engineering team.
  • Mentor engineers on technical design, systems thinking, AI-enabled development practices, and career growth.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or the equivalent through a combination of education and related work experience.

5 years minimum related work experience with the following:

  • React / TypeScript
  • Node.js
  • Python
  • AWS
  • REST APIs and event-driven architectures
  • GitHub Actions and CI/CD tooling
  • Infrastructure as Code
  • Observability and Monitoring Platforms (Datadog preferred)
  • AI-assisted software development tools and engineering automation platforms
  • Building cloud-native and distributed systems
  • Contributing to architecture and technical design decisions
  • Mentoring engineers and promoting engineering best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and drive outcomes in ambiguous environments
  • Leveraging AI-assisted development tools and agentic engineering workflows to improve productivity, testing, code quality, and documentation

Pay Range Information

The pay range for this position is listed below. Local minimum wage laws apply. This information is posted pursuant to local requirements to provide applicants with information about what they might be eligible to receive. Individual pay decisions will depend on job-related factors such as experience, education, skill, performance, and geographic location where work will be performed. Successful candidates may be able to participate in one or more incentive compensation or short-term incentive plans, which could generate additional earnings in accordance with the terms of each plan. Qualifying associates can enroll themselves and/or their eligible dependents in medical and prescription drug coverage; can participate in the H&R Block Retirement Savings Plan (401(k) Plan), the Employee Assistance Program, (virtual) fitness center programs, and the associate discount program; are automatically enrolled in Business Travel Accident Insurance; and receive Associate Tax Prep benefit.

Pay Range

$101,200.00 - $161,900.00/Yr.
