About 1X
We’re building humanoid robots that work in home - doing the chores, handling the tasks, and giving people their time back. Simple, but it’s not.
To do this right, we have to solve robotics, AI, manufacturing - at the same time, at scale, in a form factor that has to be safe enough to live with your family. If you’re inspired by this, you’ll thrive here. We’ve been at this since 2014 and we’re at the point where the hard problems are behind us and the hard work is in front of us.
NEO is our flagship - a home robot designed to move, learn, and operate in the real world alongside real people. We’re not demoing it - we’re shipping it. We’re excited to meet you, if this excites you.
If you’ve spent your career working on problems that matter and want to see them actually reach the world - this is that moment. We’re scaling, we’re hiring with intention, and we need people who want to build something that will genuinely change how humans spend their time - safely creating abundance for all.
About the Team
The Executive team sets the direction, pace, priorities, and strategy of 1X. Their ability to make those calls quickly and coherently has the greatest outsized impact on the entire company. The Chief of Staff sits at the center of that team, ensuring the highest-leverage work gets the CEO’s time and the rest of the business stays aligned around it.
Your Charter
Serve as the operating partner to the CEO and the connective tissue across the leadership team. You are accountable for making the most important decisions faster and better. You will keep leadership executing against a shared set of priorities, driving cross-functional initiatives to completion, and turning our operating rhythms into durable systems. Your work is the difference between the CEO being a bottleneck and the CEO being fully leveraged.
Key Outcomes
High-quality decisions are made faster because information is synthesized, tradeoffs are clear, and recommendations are ready
The leadership team executes toward the same priorities with fewer conflicting initiatives
Company initiatives that span engineering, operations, product, finance, and people actually ship
Leadership meetings become decision forums instead of status updates, and conflict gets resolved earlier
OKRs, planning cadence, metrics, reviews, and communication rhythms become repeatable systems
Key Competencies
Judgment under ambiguity. You walk into a room with incomplete information, identify the real decision, and drive to a call
Systems thinking. You see the company’s operating model end-to-end and spot where friction is compounding before others do
Writing and synthesis. You turn a messy debate into a one-pager that clarifies the tradeoffs and the recommendation
Executive presence. You hold your own with senior leaders, disagree productively, and never confuse proximity to power with authority
Bias for closure. You finish what you start and are allergic to open loops
Minimum Requirements
6+ years in fast-moving operator roles: Chief of Staff, strategy & operations, top-tier consulting, investing paired with operating, or a founding role. Direct CoS experience is ideal but not a deal breaker
Demonstrated track record of driving cross-functional initiatives to completion in environments with real technical and operational complexity
Experience running planning and prioritization processes (OKRs, quarterly planning, or equivalent) that leadership actually adopted
Exceptional written communication. You can produce a decision memo, a board update, or an all-hands narrative on short notice
Willing and able to work in-person at our San Carlos office
Preferred Skills
Prior Chief of Staff experience reporting directly to a founder or CEO of a scaling hardware, robotics, AI, or deep-tech company.
Background at a top-tier consulting or investing firm paired with a real operating role at a high-growth company.
Experience designing internal communications rhythms (all-hands, board updates, weekly business reviews).
Comfort translating between technical and business audiences with equal fluency.
What does a successful 1X Team Member look like
Team members at 1X who thrive here are builders. They move fast, own their work completely, and treat time like it’s the one thing you can’t get back - because it is. They say what they mean, finish what they start, and hold themselves to a standard before anyone has to ask. We push each other to be better, and we do it with honesty and respect.
