The Software Engineer II is a Scrum team member who will work in all aspects of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) to deliver enhancements and fixes for medical device. You will pragmatically apply good software engineering principles during feature definition, design, development, integration, verification and release. This position requires strong analytical capabilities, with a particular focus on developing clear, testable, and high-quality Software Requirements Specifications (SRS). You will leverage AI-assisted tools across software engineering activities to improve efficiency, consistency, and the quality of requirements, code, and technical documentation.
This position reports to the Software Engineering Manager and is part of the R&D Software Engineering Team located in Mount Waverley, Melbourne and will be an on-site role.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Participate in all Scrum events to transform the product backlog into working software increments, with responsible use of agentic AI throughout the SDLC.
- User story backlog management by defining and refining Features, User Stories, and Acceptance Criteria, ensuring alignment between stakeholder needs and software delivery outcomes
- Write and maintain clear, testable Software Requirements Specifications (SRS).
- Specify and design solutions for user stories to ensure customer value is delivered. Develop and refactor code, debug, unit test and perform code reviews in accordance with team standards.
- Participate in verification activities, including: defining test strategies, tools, mocks, reviewing test cases, developing automated tests, and manual test definition and execution. Maintain product quality by raising, assessing and fixing defects.
- Contribute to engineering documentation (requirements, risk, design, testing and release) and support delivery within a regulated medical device environment.
The essential requirements of the job include:
- Software Engineering or Computer Science degree with 6+ years of full SDLC experience
- Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to interpret complex business and technical information and communicate it effectively to diverse stakeholders
- Expertise in writing clear, structured, and testable software specifications using Gherkin and Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD) practices
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools and ability to critically assess their outputs.
- Experience with relevant software development technologies, including:
C#, .Net Framework/.Net (C#), Communication technologies: WCF, REST, Message Brokers,
gRPC, Relational databases (PostgreSQL, SQL Server) and ORMs, Unit Testing Framework: nUnit\xUnit
Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements: if applicable for role

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
- Experience working with medical device software development standards, particularly IEC 62304, or a background in a regulated engineering environment (e.g. Aerospace, automotive etc.).
- Certification in Business Analysis (e.g., CBAP, IIBA-AAC), including experience in requirements management
- UI technologies: WPF, HTML5
- Microsoft Windows Desktop, Windows Server
- Knowledge of cybersecurity principles, best practices and technologies
