About Modular
If you’re passionate about shaping the future of AI and creating tools that make a real difference in people’s lives, we want you on our team. You can read about our culture and careers to understand how we work and what we value.
About the role:
Mojo is building the future of systems programming for the AI era. Our language, compiler, runtime, and SDK enable developers to write portable, high-performance software that scales seamlessly across CPUs, GPUs, and next-generation AI hardware.
As a Debugging & Tooling Engineer, you'll help create the developer experience that brings Mojo to life. From debuggers, language servers, and IDE integrations to diagnostics, profiling, and developer workflows, you'll build the tools that thousands of engineers rely on every day. Working side by side with our compiler team, you'll help make Mojo an exceptional language to develop, debug, and optimize.
LOCATION: Candidates based in the US, Canada, and Edinburgh are welcome to apply. To support growth and collaboration, those in earlier career stages work in a hybrid capacity at our Los Altos, CA and Edinburgh office (minimum 2 days per week on-site) with relocation assistance provided for out-of-state candidates. Senior members have both in office or remote flexibility. All new hires complete onboarding in-person.
What you will do:
- Drive the evolution of the Mojo LLDB-based debugger, taking it from an experimental project to a production-quality debugger that delights developers.
- Build features across the debugging experience, including interactive debugging, expression evaluation, IDE integrations, debug information, symbol management, and diagnostics.
- Help define the next generation of developer tooling, including GPU debugging, profiling, agentic debugging, debugger MCP integration, and other cutting-edge capabilities.
- Partner closely with compiler engineers to deliver a cohesive, world-class developer experience across the Mojo ecosystem.
- Influence the long-term roadmap for debugging and tooling by identifying opportunities, proposing new capabilities, and driving technical direction.
- Collaborate with Developer Relations and the open-source community to gather feedback, shape features, support contributors, and improve the overall developer experience.
What you bring to the table:
Required
- Experience building SDKs, developer tools, or tooling for a major programming language.
- A proven track record of improving developer productivity through debugging tools, IDE integrations, language tooling, or similar infrastructure.
Strongly Preferred
