The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer is a senior technical authority responsible for defining and driving the long-term mechanical and system architecture strategy for the next generation of Biacore instruments, while ensuring that existing instrument platforms continue to evolve and remain robust, manufacturable, and competitive throughout their lifecycle. The role has broad technical influence across multiple projects, products, technology areas, and time horizons.
You will work within the Biacore R&D Hardware section, consisting of Mechanical Design Engineers, Electrical Design Engineers, Research Engineers, Optics Engineers, and Project Managers. In close collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders, you will shape mechanical and system architectures, guide critical technology and design decisions, and ensure alignment with long-term product and technology roadmaps.
The role is focused on technical leadership rather than people management and involves addressing the most complex mechanical and system-level challenges across the Biacore portfolio. As a Principal Engineer, you are expected to establish technical direction, drive engineering excellence, mentor senior technical contributors, and act as a trusted technical advisor across functions and organizational boundaries.
This position reports to the Biacore HW Section Manager and is part of the Biacore R&D Hardware Section located in Uppsala and will be an on-site role.
What you will do:
- Define and drive mechanical architecture and technical strategy across multiple systems, products, and development programs. Translate product and system requirements into robust, scalable mechanical architectures and design strategies.
- Lead and influence design reviews, technical risk assessments, root cause investigations, and resolution of critical technical issues.
- Act as a recognized subject matter expert and trusted advisor to R&D leadership and cross-functional stakeholders as well as mentor senior engineers and technical leads, strengthening organizational capability and engineering excellence.
- Drive technical alignment across disciplines including mechanics, optics, electronics, manufacturing, and service.
- Identify and evaluate emerging technologies, methods, and design approaches that support future product competitiveness.
Who you are:
- University degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Experience working with microfluidic systems and fluid handling technologies in analytical, diagnostic, or life science instrumentation with a proven track record of solving highly complex, multidisciplinary engineering challenges
- Extensive experience leading the development of complex mechanical systems throughout the full product lifecycle as well as ability to influence technical direction and deliver results across multiple projects, products, or technology areas.
- Deep expertise in mechanical architecture, system design, detailed design, and manufacturing methods.
- Fluency in Swedish and English with excellent communication skills and ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
It would be a plus if you also possess experience in:
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and providing technical leadership without formal people management responsibility.
- Good understanding of optical systems and the integration of mechanics, optics, and fluidics in precision instruments.
