Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Database Engineer responsible for database performance tuning, monitoring, automation, and architectural governance. This role emphasizes proactive performance optimization, replication, SQL Agent jobs, SSIS, and DACPAC-based deployments, along with SQL code reviews and database schema design reviews to ensure scalable, secure, and maintainable database solutions across environments.
Key Responsibilities
Performance & Optimization
- Monitor database performance and proactively identify tuning opportunities
- Optimize T-SQL queries, indexing strategies, and execution plans
- Review and refactor complex SQL code for performance, scalability, and reusability
- Analyze and resolve blocking, deadlocks, parameter sniffing, and long-running queries
- Establish and enforce performance best practices and coding standards
SQL Code Review & Schema Governance
- Perform SQL code reviews for stored procedures, functions, views, and scripts
- Review new database schema designs for:
- Performance efficiency
- Normalization and indexing strategy
- Maintainability and extensibility
- Reusability and naming conventions
- Review existing database schema updates and recommend improvements to:
- Reduce technical debt
- Optimize storage and query performance
- Improve consistency and standards compliance
- Collaborate with application and data teams to influence database design decisions early in the SDLC
Monitoring & Production Support
- Proactively monitor database health, capacity, and system alerts
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues with minimal downtime
- Provide operational support during releases, migrations, and critical incidents
- Participate in on-call rotations and post-incident root cause analysis
Automation & Documentation
- Automate routine DBA and operational tasks using T-SQL and PowerShell
- Create reusable automation frameworks for monitoring, maintenance, and deployments
- Maintain database documentation, standards, runbooks, and operational procedures
Replication
- Configure and manage SQL Server Replication (Snapshot, Transactional, Merge)
- Monitor replication health and resolve latency, conflicts, and synchronization issues
- Support replication topology changes, upgrades, and failure scenarios
SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services)
- Deploy, configure, and support SSIS packages across environments
- Monitor SSIS job execution, logging, and performance
- Troubleshoot data load failures and performance bottlenecks
- Collaborate with development teams on data integration and ETL design
DACPAC Deployment & CI/CD
- Deploy database changes using DACPAC and Data-tier Applications
- Support schema deployments using SSDT and CI/CD pipelines
- Manage schema comparisons, version control, and pre/post-deployment validation
- Troubleshoot deployment failures and resolve schema drift or conflicts
Security & Compliance
- Implement database security best practices (roles, permissions, authentication)
- Manage user access, credential rotation, and least-privilege enforcement
- Audit database activity and ensure compliance with organizational standards
SQL Agent Jobs & Scheduling
- Create, manage, and troubleshoot SQL Server Agent jobs
- Schedule and monitor jobs for data processing and maintenance tasks
- Ensure alerting, reliability, and job failure recovery mechanisms
Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server
- Advanced proficiency in T-SQL, performance tuning, and indexing
- Strong experience with SQL Server Replication
- Expertise in SQL Server Agent Jobs and scheduling
- Hands-on experience with SSIS
- Solid understanding of SQL Server security concepts
- Experience conducting SQL code reviews and schema design evaluations
Good-to-Have Skills
- PowerShell scripting for SQL automation
- Exposure to Azure SQL, Managed Instances, or cloud-based databases
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field (preferred)
- 6+ years of experience in SQL Server database engineering or development
