Responsibilities
The AVP, WC Claims is responsible for providing senior technical oversight, strategic claim management, and operating unit partnership for workers' compensation claims across Berkley Technology Underwriters (BTU), Berkley Life Sciences (BLS), and affiliated Berkley operating units. This is a senior technical leadership role. The position serves as the senior subject matter expert for workers' compensation claims handling and provides technical oversight for approximately 1,000 annual workers' compensation claims serviced through a distributed operating unit model.
This position plays a key strategic business role by improving claim outcomes, supporting reserve discipline, strengthening litigation strategy, identifying portfolio trends, and helping operating units manage workers' compensation claim performance, broker relationships, insured service expectations, and total cost of risk.
- Provide technical oversight and management of workers' compensation claims administered across multiple Berkley operating units.
- Serve as the senior technical resource for complex, catastrophic, litigated, and high-exposure workers' compensation claims.
- Conduct regular claim audits and file reviews to ensure adherence to Berkley claims best practices.
- Review and approve reserve and settlement recommendations within delegated authority.
- Identify emerging claim trends, coverage concerns, litigation risks, and exposure issues.
- Develop and implement action plans to improve claim outcomes and reduce total cost of risk.
- Partner with defense counsel, medical management vendors, and claims professionals to establish effective claim and litigation strategies.
- Ensure accurate claim coding, reserving, reporting, and documentation.
- Serve as the primary workers' compensation claims liaison to Berkley operating units participating in the shared workers' compensation claims model.
- Facilitate quarterly claims reviews and strategy discussions with operating unit leadership.
- Support operating units on broker, insured, and account-specific claim issues.
- Collaborate with underwriting, risk management, legal, and executive leadership on claim-related initiatives.
- Develop reporting and analytics supporting operating unit leadership and executive management.
- Monitor claim inventory, closure rates, litigation trends, reserve adequacy, and other key performance indicators.
- Participate in significant account stewardship meetings and broker presentations as needed.
- Support organizational initiatives and strategic business objectives, including the continued expansion of workers' compensation capabilities across the Berkley enterprise.

Qualifications
- 10+ years of workers' compensation claims experience.
- Significant experience managing complex, litigated, catastrophic, and high-exposure workers' compensation claims.
- Demonstrated expertise in claim reserving, settlement evaluation, litigation management, and claim strategy development.
- Experience managing workers' compensation claims across multiple jurisdictions, preferably in a national or multi-state commercial insurance environment.
- Experience conducting claim audits and driving technical claim excellence.
- Experience working with multiple stakeholders, including underwriting, brokers, insureds, defense counsel, and senior leadership.
- Prior technical leadership, strategic account management, or operating unit relationship management experience preferred.
Education
Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience preferred.
Professional designations such as AIC, CPCU, ARM, or equivalent industry certifications are preferred.
