Accountabilities:
- Design, develop, integrate, and maintain CPU firmware, BIOS, boot loader software, and low-level system components.
- Develop automated validation and testing solutions using C, C++, and Python to ensure software quality and reliability.
- Bring up and validate new CPU boards, working closely with hardware engineers and technology vendors.
- Evaluate new CPU technologies and integrate firmware solutions from CPU and BIOS partners into production systems.
- Analyze and resolve complex issues related to low-level firmware, BIOS, boot processes, and system initialization.
- Track developments in Linux kernel technologies and identify opportunities to improve product capabilities and internal engineering processes.
- Contribute to upstream open-source BIOS communities and support feature development.
- Review and contribute to software design specifications, technical documentation, and implementation strategies.
- Collaborate with customer support teams and customers to investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues.
- Work with system test teams to analyze failures, identify root causes, and deliver effective solutions.
- Provide technical leadership across engineering projects, features, and development tools.
- Mentor junior engineers and support knowledge sharing within the engineering organization.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience with 8+ years of relevant experience; or Master’s degree with 6+ years; or Ph.D. with 3+ years.
- Expert-level programming experience in C, with strong knowledge of C++ and Python considered an asset.
- Proven experience designing and developing CPU firmware, BIOS, and boot loader software.
- Hands-on experience bringing up new CPU boards and validating hardware platforms.
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting experience with low-level firmware and system software issues.
- Familiarity with Linux kernel architecture, design, and implementation is preferred.
- Understanding of IP networking architecture, principles, and systems is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of modern software engineering practices, design principles, and development methodologies.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex technical challenges.
- Strong software architecture, design, and implementation capabilities.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within small, highly technical teams.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly document designs, implementations, and technical decisions.
- Experience with x86 and ARM CPU architectures.
- Competitive base salary range of approximately $120,000 to $195,000 CAD, depending on location, skills, qualifications, and experience.
