This candidate should be an energetic multitasker who is ready to work in tandem with our Assignment Manager. In this role, you’ll assign daily stories according to personnel available and direct the influx of information coming into the newsroom to ensure in-depth, investigative quality content, contributing to KXAN's #1 newscasts and digital platforms.At KXAN we command a culture of excellence and the stories we publish drive real community engagement and change. This position is ideal for a highly motivated leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment, is naturally curious, has excellent communication skills and wants to play a pivotal role in our newsroom. We’re looking for someone who excels at reacting quickly to news developments, has an eye for potential stories, and can follow up with the research needed to develop impactful pieces. Ideal candidates will possess solid news judgment, highly tuned organizational skills and the ability to communicate with public information officials and the public — while also building long-term relationships with sources. Multi-tasking and prioritizing a list of requests under deadline are also essential. Duties include:Collaborate with news team to make coverage decisionsAssign, communicate, and coordinate logistics for story coverageAssist with newsgathering and research — source outreach (calls, text, email)Lead the charge on mining social media and email for information to disseminate to the newsroomBe the voice to viewer calls and the face to KXAN guests/intervieweesKeep the newsroom organized and functioning seamlessly nightsideCoordinate communication and content sharing between Nexstar StationsLead special event planning and other advance credentialingWrite/publish digital storiesUpdate content on KXAN digital platformsPost stories to KXAN social mediaSend push alerts to stories via our news app What We’re Looking ForA proactive problem-solver who can anticipate newsroom needsA team player who supports reporters, producers, and photographersSomeone who thrives in fast-moving, unpredictable environmentsStrong attention to detail with high accountabilityPrevious newsroom experience is required. Assignment desk and/or digital reporting/producing experience preferred. Strong writing skills and knowledge of AP style are essential. A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication or related field is preferred.Physical Demands & Work Environment: The Assignment Editor must be able to stand, sit, conduct telephone conversations and interviews, use email, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work near others, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Must be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls.
