Robotics Engineer - Autonomous Data Center Systems
Operating at LOB-wide scope; sets the vision and technical standards for hyper-scale, elastic distributed systems. Leads architecture and optimization across interdependent platforms, eliminating performance and scalability bottlenecks and advancing innovation in data plane technologies. Engineers fault-tolerant, in-service‑upgradable designs that withstand partitions and network unreliability, establishing SLO‑aligned durability and availability bars for other services. Defines organizational KPIs and telemetry practices; implements advanced dashboards, chaos strategies, and CI/CD-integrated resilience testing; and promotes formal verification and novel replication/synchronization approaches. Provides thought leadership during complex incidents, sets operational readiness and SOP standards, and drives long‑term corrective strategies. Establishes organizational security baselines and remediation programs for multi‑tenant environments, ensures compliance and documentation quality, and leads creation of state‑of‑the‑art automation (IaC) and change strategies enabling safe, automated patching, updates, and rollbacks.
Key Responsibilities
System Design & Architecture - System Scalability:
Provide visionary leadership in the architecture of highly scalable distributed systems across various businesses, ensuring horizontal and vertical scalability and overall performance, including leveraging distributed state management tools.
Resolve performance and scalability bottlenecks to drive significant optimizations and improvements for hyper-scale code and/or systems, leading to industry-leading performance.
Define a new set of industry standards for scalability requirements.
Design systems across the organization to scale with elasticity (e.g., effectively scaling both up and down).
Advocate for innovation and improvements to data plane platforms.
Evaluate whether systems are meeting nonfunctional scalability requirements, and proactively anticipate growing business needs across the organization.
System Design & Architecture - System Reliability Design:
Lead the design and implementation of highly sophisticated fault-tolerant systems across the organization capable of withstanding in-service updates by implementing innovative redundancy, replication, and automatic failover capabilities.
Leverage expertise to oversee the design of interdependent systems that effectively handle service disruptions (e.g., network partitions) by prioritizing consistency, availability, or partition tolerance.
Lead the optimization and identification of novel and innovative techniques to manage network unreliability.
Leverage industry insights to design interdependent systems that are durable and adhere to service level objectives (SLOs), setting new standards for availability and durability of other computing services across the organization.
System Design & Architecture - System Reliability Performance:
Set organizational standards for defining key performance indicators (KPIs) and telemetry to identify risks, gaps, or cyclical dependencies in running systems.
Innovate and implement new approaches across the organization for creating and customizing dashboards, telemetry systems, and alerting mechanisms to proactively ensure system health and reliability.
Proactively evaluate and design system functionality for future products or businesses still in conception.
Design and implement chaos testing strategies to evaluate system resilience and durability, and help drive cross-team integration of chaos testing to support the CI/CD pipeline.
System Design & Architecture - Correctness / Availability:
Evaluate innovative industry standards and techniques for verifying correctness.
Publish and present across the organization on advanced formal verification techniques for system design correctness.
Create novel strategies across the organization for data replication and synchronization to ensure data integrity and availability.
Operational Troubleshooting & Incident Management:
· Provide thought leadership in diagnosing, debugging, and resolving complex issues in active, interdependent systems across the organization to support ongoing operation.
· Oversee strategic initiatives to prevent interruptions, ensuring no maintenance windows are required for customers and users when resolving issues.
· Maintain deep expertise in dependencies, dependents, and owned systems across the organization to drive effective troubleshooting and performance.
· Set standards for operational readiness and standard operating procedures across the organization, and hold third-party partners accountable for meeting those standards.
· Identify innovative and novel approaches for managing incident response and root cause investigations that lead to long-term solutions.
Compliance & Security:
· Lead the design and implementation of advanced security measures to protect data and applications in multi-tenant environments, setting organizational standards.
· Lead execution of strategic remediation plans to address identified security gaps and ensure continuous improvement.
Automation & Change Management:
· Oversee efforts to ensure cloud infrastructure is in compliance with industry standards and regulations, and guide documentation efforts across the organization.
· Lead the development of state-of-the-art automation tools and strategies (e.g., Infrastructure as Code (IaC)).
· Design strategies for effective change management of patching, updating, and rolling back applications, and design interdependent systems across the organization to allow for automation of these processes.
