What You Will Do

Silent-Aire/Johnson Controls is hiring! The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for mechanical analysis, detailed design, subsystem integration, and overall mechanical performance of HVAC equipment. This role supports new product development, sustaining engineering, prototyping, laboratory validation, and manufacturing execution across air handling, fan coil, and VAV platforms.

In this position, you will work closely with cross-functional teams—including electrical, controls, test laboratory, compliance, sourcing, manufacturing, service, applications, and marketing—to deliver market-leading, safe, compliant, serviceable, and cost-effective HVAC and Modular Data Center products. You will provide technical leadership on complex mechanical designs and serve as a subject-matter expert for assigned products or subsystems. Candidates must be commuting distance to Largo, FL, since this is an onsite position. For candidates that are able to relocate, we offer various relocation packages.

How You Will Do It

  • Perform mechanical analysis and design of Modular Data Centers, CDUs, HVAC units, components, and assemblies, including sheet-metal, insulation, fans, motors, heat exchangers and piping packages. Duties will be preformed both individually and as part of a broader multidisciplinary team and/or with mechanical junior engineer(s).

  • Develop innovative mechanical solutions for custom and configured equipment based on customer requirements, performance targets, and regulatory constraints.

  • Estimating product design and build costs for both new and retrofit scenarios.

  • Execute design improvements to optimize manufacturability, serviceability, performance, and product quality.

  • Take ownership of assigned products or subsystems and provide technical leadership throughout the product lifecycle.

  • Use SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and related tools to create and maintain 3D models, drawings, DXFs, and assemblies.

  • Create and maintain accurate assembly bills of material (BOMs), including raw materials, fabricated parts, and purchased components.

  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, design guides, submittal documents, and technical specifications.

  • Support configurable product platforms by developing and maintaining design rules and logic used in dynamic BOM generation.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing to support prototype and mock-up builds.

  • Partner with the test laboratory to define and execute test plans validating performance and reliability

  • Analyze test results, identify root causes, and drive corrective actions

  • Support manufacturing engineering with DFMA improvements to ensure successful transition from design to production.

  • Interpret and apply applicable mechanical safety and compliance requirements, including UL standards.

  • Provide mechanical guidance to applications engineering, sales, service, and field teams regarding product capabilities, installation constraints, and troubleshooting.

  • Lead and participate in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce design cycle time and increase engineering throughput.

  • Mentor junior engineers and designers to ensure consistent application of engineering standards and best practices.

What We Look For

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.

  • 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience in a product-based manufacturing environment.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering theory, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and airflow fundamentals.

  • Experience designing sheet-metal assemblies and mechanical HVAC components.

  • Proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD tools (AutoCAD and SolidWorks preferred) and creation of detailed drawings and specifications.

  • Experience developing and maintaining mechanical BOMs.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting prototype builds and laboratory testing.

  • Familiarity with building design and HVAC systems.

  • Familiarity with HVAC manufacturing processes, including sheet-metal fabrication, fastening methods, insulation installation, brazing, and welding.

  • Knowledge of DFMA, cost optimization, and value engineering.

  • Experience supporting configurable product platforms.

  • Prior experience mentoring engineers or designers.
