Collins Aerospace is a global leader in technologically advanced and intelligent solutions for the aerospace and defence industry.

This is an exciting new role within Collins and a unique opportunity to be part the ASG electric thrust reverser actuation centre of excellence, working as part of a team of technical innovators in the development of new technologies to position the business for success on next generation of aerospace nacelle actuation. The position will be located within a new bespoke facility in Wolverhampton.

Reporting to the ASG-UK Site Lead – Chief Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering structural analysis activities to support the design and development of electric actuation systems and associated subsystems.

What You Will Do

As a Senior Stress Engineer, Engineer shall be responsible for performing preliminary and detailed structural analysis to support the design and development phase for electric actuation and associated subsystems.

Responsibility extends across the entire life cycle of the product, from conceptualizing and design, to prototyping and manufacturing, integration and verification testing, through production support. 

You will be expected to support the stress activities using both classical and computational methods, working with a wider team to plan and manage the analysis workload, develop new capability whilst working to the highest level of integrity.  In addition, you will collaborate across a multi-functional team and work with internal and external customers during all phases of design, integration, test and production.

You will support new business opportunities and develop key customer relationships. You will also support the development of the engineering strategy, including a technology roadmap and new business opportunities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Carry out preliminary sizing analysis and conceptual design support.
  • Perform classical and computational analysis including:
    • Analysis of mechanical elements such as gear, splines, threads, lead/ball screws and bearings.
  • Produce technical reports for both internal and external customers.
  • Produce technical summaries for both internal and external customers.
  • Assist in the development of new capability to support technology roadmaps.
  • Support failure reporting and corrective action, investigative and deep dive analysis.
  • Support the wider local and global Stress Analysis team in all aspects of structural analysis
  • Collaborate across the team to identify synergies, best practices, and opportunities
  • The role will be based in a new Collins Aerospace facility in Wolverhampton, UK, with <10% international travel.

What You Must Have

  • Qualified to degree-level in a Mechanical Engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated stress analysis experience.
  • Working level of understanding of classical analysis methods including:
    • Mechanical components.
    • Classical stressing methods (Shigley, Peterson, Bruhn etc).
    • Strength of materials.
    • Static and fatigue strength calculations.
  • Working knowledge of structural FEA including:
    • Linear analysis
    • Non-linear material analysis
    • Contact/assembly model analysis
  • Ability to derive margins of safety and damages with a high level of confidence.
  • Proven ability for problem solving in structural analysis environments.
  • Experience in supporting failure investigations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to a wide range of audiences.
  • A passion for structural analysis, self-development and excellence within a team.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience using Ansys, MathCAD and CATIA.
