Job description/responsibilities: The Oklahoma Historical Society is seeking a Historical Interpreter II at the Oklahoma Territorial Museum in Guthrie OK.

The mission of the Oklahoma Historical Society is to collect, preserve, and share the history and culture of the state of Oklahoma and its people. The OHS was founded on May 27, 1893, by members of the Territorial Press Association. In 1918, the OHS was relocated to the State Capitol, and in 1930, it was moved to the Wiley Post building. In 2005 came the opening of the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City. Over the years the OHS has developed numerous collections, programs, research centers, museums, historic homes, and military sites across the state.

About the Role

This position will report to the OTM Site Director. This role focuses on educational programming and events at the Oklahoma Territorial Museum and off-site, collections care, promotes a visitor experience consistent with the mission of the Oklahoma Historical Society.

The ideal candidate will possess a college degree in history, anthropology, museum studies or a closely related field.

 The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills and be a team player with the ability to work effectively with staff and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage educational programs and classes for children and lifelong learners
  • Create, research, implement, and maintain programs for in-house and outreach programming
  • Assist in developing and implementing exhibits
  • Interact with visitors and guests in the museum galleries
  • Meet and greet museum visitors and guests
  • Collections Care including accepting and processing new donations, caring for artifacts
  • Building and maintaining cooperative relationships with local community
  • Daily use of social media including content creation, posting, and responding to inquiries
  • Cleaning and maintenance of museum as needed: painting, changing light bulbs, changing air filters and other similar tasks
  • Handle money from admissions, programing, and museum gift shop sale
  • Assist in gift shop operations: stocking, pricing, purchasing, inventorying

Working Conditions

Physical requirements include stooping, kneeling, bending, standing, squatting/crouching, crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing (including ladders), reaching above the shoulders and lifting up to 40 lbs. Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects may be required.


Salary and Benefits

Compensation: $43,000.00
