Job Description

Position Summary

The role is responsible for manufacturing accounting, fixed assets accounting, financial controls, and reporting activities. This person ensures accurate financial records, supports monthly and quarterly close processes, evaluates accounting impacts of business decisions, and helps maintain compliance with accounting standards, internal control requirements, and external reporting obligations.

This position works closely with finance, operations, shared services, and other business partners to support sound decision-making, improve processes, and strengthen financial governance across manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities

General Accounting and Financial Analysis

  • Perform general ledger activities with accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with professional accounting standards and generally accepted accounting principles.

  • Identify, interpret, and assess potential accounting risks and issues.

  • Research and analyze accounting transactions, contracts, and business events to determine the appropriate accounting treatment.

  • Partner with finance and business teams to evaluate the accounting implications of transactions and operational decisions.

  • Perform analytical reviews to support material business decisions and financial conclusions.

  • Evaluate current accounting practices and recommend process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and control.

Financial Reporting and Accounting Standards

  • Support internal and external financial reporting activities, including analysis of consolidated results, preparation of management review materials, and coordination of reporting timelines.

  • Research and interpret new accounting standards and determine how they apply to General Motors.

  • Support compliance with quarterly and annual external reporting requirements.

  • Help ensure high-quality reporting through timely review, analysis, and coordination across stakeholders.

Internal Controls and Compliance

  • Execute and maintain internal controls and financial procedures in line with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements and company policies.

  • Support compliance with inventory control policies, fixed assets controls, and accounting governance requirements.

  • Identify control gaps, recommend corrective actions, and help strengthen the overall control environment.

Manufacturing Controllership

  • Monitor manufacturing cost structures and analyze variances.

  • Support monthly close activities related to manufacturing costs, including cost reconciliations and over-absorption or under-absorption analysis.

  • Monitor non-productive inventory levels and support corrective actions where needed.

  • Assess and compare labor and overhead absorption rates across manufacturing plants.

  • Respond to questions from manufacturing finance teams and ensure alignment with accounting standards.

  • Support accounting oversight for restructuring programs affecting manufacturing operations.

  • Evaluate the financial impact of operational changes on manufacturing costs and accounting results.

  • Review the reconciliation between legal entity financial results and cost of sales reporting to ensure accuracy.

  • Analyze tooling rates on a quarterly basis in line with program launch and end-of-production timing.

Fixed Assets and Capital Accounting

  • Review fixed asset reconciliations prepared by the shared services team and ensure alignment with the general ledger.

  • Analyze fixed asset classification and mapping, including additions, depreciation, and disposals.

  • Monitor aging of construction projects in progress and communicate or escalate long-outstanding balances to the responsible teams.

  • Oversee fixed asset transfers and ensure proper accounting treatment.

  • Monitor government grants to ensure proper alignment with asset capitalization and reporting requirements.

  • Act as the finance focal point for plant and land sale transactions.

  • Monitor differences in useful life accounting between U.S. accounting standards and international accounting standards.

  • Oversee periodic physical inventory counts for fixed assets across South America legal entities, including coordination with external auditors.

  • Monitor annual vendor tooling confirmation activities and follow up on exceptions as needed.

Continuous Improvement

  • Support finance transformation and efficiency initiatives, including system improvements and regulatory change implementation.

  • Drive improvements in accounting processes, reconciliations, reporting quality, and control execution.

  • Promote standardization, transparency, and stronger process discipline across manufacturing and fixed assets accounting activities.

One team

  • Provide direction, coordination, and support to a team with similar functional responsibilities.

  • Help prioritize activities, clarify accounting expectations, and promote consistent execution across the team.

Qualifications

Basic Required

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting with active Regional Accounting Council registration

  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing accounting, fixed assets accounting, and financial reporting.

  • Experience with monthly close, reconciliations, cost analysis, and internal controls.

  • Ability to interpret accounting standards and apply them to business transactions.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work across functions and communicate clearly with both finance and non-finance stakeholders.

  • Experience managing deadlines and balancing multiple priorities in a complex environment.

  • Knowledge of modernization and automation tools such as Python, Power BI, and artificial intelligence solutions to improve analysis, reporting, and process efficiency.

  • Advanced or fluent English with excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong computer skills.

Basic Preferred

  • Knowledge of existing GM information technology systems and business processes.

  • Master of Business Administration or Master of Science degree in a business-related field.

  • Intermediate or fluent Spanish.
